Windows 10: Windows 10 Activation

A few days ago I was asked by my sister to switch a PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The PC had been bought with Windows 10 but downgraded to 7 for office use. The PC had never been used since being bought in 2015. Windows 10 installed fine but I couldn't activate it with the Product Key. The helper guy said I had to wait 180 days for another try! In the end I bought a new Product Key for £30. Isn't this extremely mean-spirited of Microsoft? Ok the licence was for two installations, but this was a re-installation 5 years on!

I won't buy a key, stupid.

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?
