Windows 10: Windows 10 acts like I don't have PIN setup, even though I do and I login with PIN every time.

CONFIGURATION


Lenovo Legion Y740, Windows 10 v2004 Build 19041.423

Login with Microsoft account and PIN.


ISSUE

Since last few weeks, Windows Security has started prompting "Set up Windows Hello for your account."


Problem is - I had already done that on day one and have been using that PIN to login into my PC since then. Every single time I login using the PIN and yet, now windows is acting like I don't have PIN setup.


STEPS

Windows Security > Account Protection > Set Up.

OR

Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign in options > Windows Hello PIN > Add.


A "Create a PIN" window pops up. Click Next.

It then throws an overlay saying "Making sure it's you" and asks me to enter the PIN of the account..!!

I enter the PIN and the whole PIN setup window goes away.

But nothing has changed. Windows Security / Windows Settings is still acting like I don't have PIN setup.


i.e. it is asking me to create a PIN, then detects that the account already has a PIN, so does nothing; and still keeps complaining.

Login PIN, I want to use the long very secure password I always have. How do i do this with the new PIN setup

I like that there is another step to secure my account. But I do not want to use the PIN for my login. I want to use the password.

If the 'update' to security is, 'make the user remember another password/pin' then that's just f****** lazy.

I want to keep the PIN as a security feature but not use it for the login every time. I want my long, well thought out password.

WHERE THE GOOD G*D D*** IS THE ANSWER FOR THIS. How many people worked on this roll out and failed to think that some of us may want to use the password we have and not use a short PIN. WHAT THE H***

Unfortunately NOT!

Microsoft needs to get their act together. Not everyone needs or wants a pin or PW, EVERY time they turn on their computer.

Yes, I can confirm that.
Just like Ztrucker said...…………..
(A) If clicking at the Microsoft Account box on the right first > sign in with the password > it will go to desktop without prompting for Pin create.
(B) If entering the password into the password box right away without clicking at the Microsoft Account box first, then create Pin prompt will appear.
That registry editing tutorial ( A Workaround to Disable PIN Login in Windows 10 / 8 | Password Recovery ) is not necessary. I can keep the "value" at 1 and still be able to avoid prompting to create PIN if I use method (A)

Just one extra step on sign in. I can live with that.

Thing is, I do not have this issue on the rest of my 4 computers.
