    Windows 10 and domains

I've been trying to get the Windows 10 icon into my taskbar for about a week.

Today my grey cells worked and I realised that it might be because my machine is part of a domain at home (a Windows 2012 server R2 setup as a file server and 4 windows 8.1 machines - 2 laptops and two desktops).

Removing one laptop from my domain and yes the icon appeared and I've now reserved the update. But what do I do about my other machine? I'm a home user not a business.

    Any suggestions please?

    :)

  2. Personal Laptops and school domains

I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

This is something to ask your school Help Desk because they all have different policies. There is no reason they should not answer frankly since they'd not want you having problems caused by their software from joining the domain.

I would have my questions written out and either submit them in writing or use it as a discussion checklist so you get all of your questions answered.

If you want to get a second opinion you can always ask back here, but we are more a consumer forums than for IT Pros who manage domains, so you might get their perspective at our sister forums for IT departments at Technet:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

  3. Personal Laptops and school domains

I have a personal laptop they i use solely for school and I'd like to print right from it. It's a bit more complicated as my school uses papercut to manage its printers. I don't know if a workgroup will work because i can't seem to get the paper cut client
on my computer so joining the school domain might be the only other way. If there is another way then I'd appreciate the input. If not then I was wondering exactly what control the domain will have over my computer.

My main concerns are whether the domain will be able to restrict me from accessing my local admin accounts to leave the domain whenever I want to. Also if they can't then can they moniter what I do on my local accounts? And finally, do they have the power
    to wipe my computer.

    Any help is appreciated,

    Thanks

No, machines joined to a domain do not get the GWX icon. But you don't need it. You can just download the ISO and do the upgrade manually instead of through Windows Update.

Thanks, I did read that once you had done the initial download you could then download an iso, to do a clean install.

I've also seen posts that say you can request the download through windows update (as opposed to the GWX route) but I cannot find anything that tells me how to do it.

The only thing GWX does is enable Windows Update to download Windows 10. It doesn't do anything else. The upgrade itself is done when you actually do the upgrade. Either by Windows Update or by ISO. You can update from the ISO, without doing a clean install.
