Windows 10: Windows 10 and routers.

I've been a long time Linksys router user and the latest version of Windows 10 Build 19042.685 breaks the right click menu for the router in the Network Explorer Page.. where all your network devices will show up. The right click error message is as follows...




Now I've tried two different routers and checked how they behave. The Netgear showed up in the Network Explorer page with a different style of Icon than the Linksys and the right click menu was working as it should. I also tried an ASUS router and it worked even better than the Linksys and Netgear routers. Everything showed up as it should and there wasn't any extra router drivers offered by Windows update for the ASUS... generic router drivers are offered for the Linksys and Netgear routers.

Basically the routers are the same far as their function, but they all react differently inside of Windows Network Explorer and device manager. The Linksys creates 3 software devices inside the device manager. Netgear creates a system device inside of the device manager. ASUS creates no extra devices.

I've also heard that Linksys routers use SMB 1.0/CIFS file sharing support to work properly... you have to manually enable support for it inside the Windows features on/off page.

Now comes the big question... why does Windows 10 act differently with different routers brands?

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

How to factory reset Cisco 1700 Router

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.


First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

 

wireless conection to router
