Windows 10: Windows 10 Anniversary Update Available August 2

Discus and support Windows 10 Anniversary Update Available August 2 in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; I was curious...when you get a new build upgrade (as we will be getting with the Redstone Release on August 2) during the upgrade, does windows grab... Windows doesn't get drivers from the manufacturers sites, not directly. The manufacturers submit drivers to Microsoft to be delivered via Windows update. On clean install drivers are installed from the driver store in the install media. Then more may be installed via Windows update. If a manufacturer doesn't submit a driver for your hardware to Microsoft, you will have to install it manually, from that manufacturers web site download. On an upgrade , from one build to another, I would think your currently installed drivers would be carried over. Unless they are incompatible? I don't know for sure what actually happens. I haven't paid enough attention to say. I don't do an upgrade unless I have to. If I can avoid it, I avoid it and do a clean install. Going from one OS to another like 7 to 10, I would imagine is a different scenario. Windows 10 drivers are likely installed. Similar to what happens on a clean install. Somebody that works in IT can probabaly give you some better info.

    My grand plan.

Two desktops running W10 Pro and one laptop with W10 Home.

On my Pro systems I have checked the Defer Upgrades option so I hopefully can do them at my pace.
The Home system does not have that option so it will be my test system and see how this upgrade goes.

On Aug 1 I will use Macrium Reflex to make images on all 3 systems.

I hope MS releases an ISO for this new build and will download it in case I need to do a clean install.
I will let all systems upgrade to see how it goes and probably do clean installs at a later date.

MS normally releases updates at 10am PDT (noon my time) so I can enjoy my coffee and breakfast before the big event. But they may do a rolling release to save their servers but really don't know.

laissez les bons temps rouler (Cajun French - Let the good times roll.)

Alpha covered your question fairly well. I'll ad what I know

Device OEMS write the drivers for their devices
They deliver the drivers and provide new devices for testing to MS
MS has 1000s of machines with various HW configurations running tests

When the the driver passes MS hardware labs testing, it is added to Windows Update for delivery to end users

You get drivers when MS certifies them - they aren't necessarily tied to Windows Releases, they're tied to passing the tests
Windows versions do have different drivers, but that's mainly due to different hardware

I'm not sure if the question really needs to be asked though. The accuracy in driver delivery has improved since Vista, Win7 did a good job, Win8 did a very good job, and Win10 did does a great job.

If you let Windows Update provide drivers your system will be stable. They won't be the latest and greatest driver from the OEM - those are probably being tested at MS labs. So there is a time lag between what the OEM offers and what WU delivers.

My take: the only reasons to download a driver from an OEM site are:
    • the driver is not supplied by WU
    • Device Manager flags the driver
    • an issue your machine exhibits is known to be fixed by a more recent OEM driver (release notes)

Downloading a driver just because it is newer isn't worth destabilizing your system.

I guess what I'm really saying is Don't worry about device drivers *Wink

Got it guys... and thanks for the explanations...But are you saying that eventually you do get updated drivers directly from the Windows 10 updater? And if so, do i need to activate anything extra to get them? (i have mine set to do automatic updates)...

  14. Running the 14385 here since these latest builds have been arriving only a couple of days apart having skipped over the 383 on the main which will be expecting the RS1 update as it did the TH2 last November and hopefully all this time around goes well.

The TH2 became buggy and had to be replaced by Insider builds after only two months! Lately once past the 295 and 316 builds mostly minor annoyances these newer builds so far have been running without issues. A secomd desktop used for testing things will still continue as well as a few VMs on seeing Insider builds continue while hopefully the main can keep the RS1 on for at least a bit longer this time around!
