I can see the ISO being that size. The download for the Insider builds aren't that large. Why would the RTM upgrade be that large.

I suspect that the next ESD for the 64 bit pro will be around 2.9 Gig. Just like the latest insider build.

The 64bit size always exceeds the 3gb mark as a rule. The arrival by WU would be those parts downloaded to match the correct kernel as well as edition while the separate downloads in ISO form are usually dual edition. I wouldn't the RS1 to be any smaller but possibly slightly larger with the additional features and support added like Bash and revised Start menu for example then seen with the TH2 update.

What you have been seeing lately is the RS1 Preview builds while the TH2 only saw the one 10585 Insider there. Note the watermark disappearing with the 383 is a solid indication of that. Since the Insider builds are developer builds this allows for any and all last minute changes before the general update goes out.

  6. The install.esd files are obviously going to be much smaller then ISOs you download as complete disc image files. At times note you may not see the Install.esd but Install.wim file instead. Oops!

The esd and wim files however are not the main portion of anything but are present as part of the recovery options available not the direct upgrade or update which unpacks quite a bit more replacing the existing files in the "$Windows~BT" and "$Windows~WS" folders typically seen. The esd file itself for the 385 build comes in at 2.78gb here note by itself when browsed to separately while still only one file out of the entire downloaded build.

The upgrade by WU update will first download the entire package and then detects the flavor as well as edition of which version is presently on. The downloader unpacks all the setup files which then run from the drive to see the latest upgrade over the existing. The RS1 should still be found working in the same fashion as the TH2 went on in that regard. The esd and wim files are simply something you can extract for separate use.

Will the anniversary upgrade retain all third party programmes (and their settings) that have been previously installed ?

Also, what happens as regards drivers ?
This is a potentially problematic issue for me on one of my laptops because W10 attempts to install an unsuitable driver for the wireless card. The result is that in the final stages of a W10 install, the buggy driver suddenly starts causing massive system interrupts such that the final few percent of the install take several hours. It then takes an hour or more to manually open device manager and disable it, its that bad and slow running.

Will the anniversary upgrade leave existing user installed drivers alone ?

Yes, if you "update" instead of doing a clean install. I will probably do a clean install, but that's just me.

Hopefully, driver issues will be solved before the Anniversary Edition is released. However, there will be some that will continue to have driver issues. There's just no way that Microsoft can cover every computer, especially those that are highly customized and built to "off the chart" specifications.

Dumb question . . . have you given feedback on the issue? Also, I think you can open a Microsoft ticket; as well, it's up to Dell or Acer to provide (to Microsoft) the correct drivers for your laptop.

I think that one's the $64,000.00 question. So far, Microsoft hasn't left my Power settings alone. Not drivers, but very irritating, to say the least.

Thanks Wynona. I think that providing the 'update' continues to work as well as W10 does now then I might stick with that, certainly on the Acer anyway. I'm really curious and interested to see how it all pans out tbh. The Dell, well I might clean install on that at some point as there were zero issues clean installing onto a blank unallocated drive.

Not a dumb question *Smile yes, I've reported it several times and given details of the alternative driver that does work. Its the Acer that has this driver issue but... its only 5 months shy of being 10 yrs old so no chance of a new driver although as I found out, there are some out there that do work OK. The wifi card is an Atheros 5005G ? from memory.

  11. For each newer build until now strictly waiting for the RS1 for the main and skipping the few remaining Insider builds the software not driver portion for the sound card not being an onboard audio chipset but older model expansion that so far has only seen 8.1 x64 Support 1.2 available for download and then with the web updater then finds the 10 driver set is needed simply to get the main console reinstalled.

Pain in the kister constantly tending to that every 2-3 days lately! That's one item that gets trashed every time howvever while everything except the UAC slider remains unchanged! So far since the last clean install going through every other build since all other programs have remained intact and run without any unexpected problems other then what they would have seen.

It was the Threshold 2 update that went bonkers in a couple of months when not having the main build seeing each newer build and hopefully won't see the same with the RS1 going on soon. A couple of Windows sounds playback problems for certain sounds assigned to a couple of functions came up on a couple of builds but resolved since. In comparison having been booted in 7 over the last few days has only further shown 7 is running buggier then 10 while that install is due to be replaced anyways.

Thanks Tairiku *Smile I quickly looked in group policy but I don't see the option... so I'm guessing its for insider builds only.
