Windows 10: Windows 10 antimalware CPU issue and hard drive space?

I have a number of datapads with a 58Gb SSD. They are designed to run Windows 10 and one data recording program; nothing else. Since they were networked and have done Windows updates they are hitting 100% CPU usage due to the antimalware executable process. I am being told that the machines are running slowly because the hard drive is full but that doesn't seem to me to be the issue? The hard drives are full but I don't know why that should be the case, and I don't know why that would cause antimalware to be maxing out the CPU. Is something else going on here?
