Windows 10 April 2018 Update is causing blank desktop on some PCs

Unfortunately, yet another bug is hitting the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and it is also breaking down the computers. The users on social media platform (Reddit) claims that a bug in Windows 10 April 2018 Update is causing blank desktop on some PCs.

It looks like a strange bug breaks down a number of PCs. A discussion on sub-Reddit claims that the bug has something to do with compatibility issues between certain antivirus software and Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

At this point, it’s hard to determine how widespread the bug is, and it’s not yet known why this problem is occurring. The update appears to install correctly, but when booting to Windows 10, a blank desktop shows up without icons.

The user on Reddit explains that after installing Windows 10 April 2018 Update, the system will boot a screen with three option; Windows Rollback, Windows 10 on Volume [x] and
Windows 10 on Volume [x]. If you’ll select the first option, the system will reboot and the two other option will boot the PC to a black or blank desktop with no icons. The recovery options such as Startup Repair, Reset, Go Back To the Previous Version, and System Restore doesn’t work.

Reddit user gcdrm, who works at a small computer repair shop, advises affected users to reinstall Windows 10 operating system from an installation media. You can follow our guide to create a bootable drive on your spare PC and recover the broken machine.

Microsoft told us that they are investigating the issue.

    Windows 10 April 2018 update 1803

This update (Windows 10 April 2018 1803) was downloaded to my desktop PC - six month old Novatech ION 100 - a few days ago. Once the process appeared to be complete, the machine died completely!! Blank screens ( I have a two-monitor setup) and will not
boot or load Windows (even with one monitor disconnected). I cannot persuade it to boot from a USB rescue drive
loaded with the update 1803, as recommended on the Microsoft website
and is now completely useless. Apart from feeling very angry that Microsoft should do this to me, I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to how to rescue the situation, other than go out and buy an Apple iMac! This must have happened to others amongst
the hundreds of millions of Windows 10 users.

How to resolve problems installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

What should I do if I’m having trouble installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update? For example, what steps should I try if I’m having any of the following problems:

    • While updating to the latest version, Windows restarts and goes back to the old version.
    • The update to the latest version of Windows gets stuck for hours, so I had to restart and go back to the old version.
    • I thought I installed the latest version of Windows, but now Windows Update says I need to install it again.
    • I tried to update to the latest version, but now I can’t sign into Windows or reach the desktop.
