Windows 10 as a main OS?

    Hello,
I am sorry if this question has already been answered. If so please direct me. I run W7 64 bit Utimate on my main computer. When MS offered W8 on the cheap I got it to play and replace my XP on secondary unit. Not using or enjoying that much I participated on the Windows Eight Forum and eventually got to Window 8.1, deleting all the apps and running the standard window software. Then the Windows 10 Preview. I like the latest 10130 with caveats.
Here is where I hope someone can be of help!!!!!!
    1. I do not wish to use the cloud for anything
    2. I am fine with the Windows 7 programs and do not want the new mail, calculator, calendar etc. Mainly because I am not aware of the their tracking, cloud involvement and such. I have been uninstalling everything I could in previous 8's and 10's. Haven't really had a chance to look over this version yet. Intend to try to do the same. I have noticed that the normal desktop calculator is no longer available and is replaced with an app looking thing.
    3. Don't really care about live tiles.
    Can anyone assist or explain?
    Sincerely appreciate any help!

    :)

  2. When display identified as 1 is set as main display, display 2 acts as main for most apps.

Just to verify, have you made sure that the video card drivers are updated?

And just an additional question, what is your setup for these dual monitors? Are you using VGA splitter cable or VGA and DVI?

    We'd wait for your response.

it's been this way for more than a month.

no update that I know of started it.

all drivers installed and up to date

    Windows 10 pro 64 bit version 1607

wake windows up from sleep, have to turn on monitor 2 to sign in. Sign in, monitor 1 has all the main display features...

    Hello Rocky,
I guess I am trying to figure out which programs are cloud inclusive and how to deactivate them. Since I posted this, I went through the ALL APPS and found many things which can not be uninstalled and I may not want it. Alarms and Clocks, Camera, Calendar, 3D Builder to mention a few.
How do these Apps differ from Windows 7 traditional executable files?

    Hello.

Someone will probably jump in and disagree, but just connecting online to your ISP puts you in the cloud.
Most of what you are not interested in,
can be turned off or disabled like Cortana, live tiles, synchronization, or OneDrive.

If you go thru settings, you will find many switches that allow you to turn stuff off and
you can switch to a local account either while installing or later on.

The idea of universal (modern / metro) apps that cannot be uninstalled started with 8.1
In 8.0, all metro (universal / modern) apps can be uninstalled.

The difference between 7 style desktop program executables and universal apps is a complicated topic.
Basically, modern apps are based on WinRT and desktop programs are based on Win32.
    See Wikipedia or online inquiry.

I don't use 10 as a main OS but most everyone on this forum does or will after July 29.

This is a list of universal (WinRT) apps one gets with the preview. Some can be uninstalled, and some cannot.
btw, some of these do not work in build 10130 and depend on how you are signed in - an MSA or local

    Howdy nt62,
Thanks for the info. I guess I will have to investigate further. Back in Windows 8 I was hoping someone would write a program that would do all the modern/metro app removal for me as well as a startup menu.
WinRT or Win32, thanks again. Maybe there is a tutorial on the site to help someone with my particular views accomplish the assigned task *092.

    1. You can use a Local account which disables all Microsoft online services, but there are some limitations. I believe the main one is that you cannot use the Shop for apps.

    2. Most of the Windows 7 application have been replaced with app versions, but the app versions are mostly just a straight rewrite and have similar if not identical functionality. Online support is only as needed and I believe identical to Windows 7 versions, like Calendar being able to tie into hotmail calendar, Facebook birthdays, or a holiday database.

    3. Live tiles can be disabled. You can customize the start screen/menu as desired and while you can't completely remove the section the Tiles reside, you can populate it with tiles to apps you use frequently and disable live tiles on all of them.

You don't really have to be worried about the cloud with Windows as much, Microsoft doesn't really allow third parties to access your information or computer without your knowledge and permission, and everything you do decide to let Microsoft store online is tied to your Microsoft account which makes it easy to see what is being stored online and remove as desired.

Glennc - I imagine you've been trying to uninstall apps from the Start Menu. Go to Settings - System and then Apps and Features and wait for the App list to populate. If you click on each individual app you'll see there's an option to uninstall. However ! it doesn't work yet - at least not the last time I tried it. But it's there so will probably work in the final release.

FuturDreamz Actually, you can regain the section the tiles reside in. I got rid of the lot and then squashed the section down with my cursor the same way you would resize a window.

glennc, the way I understand it at the basic level (very well could be wrong) the application icons are essentially a shortcut to the program which resides on a server unlike a program which is resident on your computer.

When you download an application for a smart phone, ipad, or surface device you are creating a shortcut to that application on a server.

    Hello. @CmmTch ...
You are close but Modern Apps must be resident in memory so that the local CPU can process the data.
How Modern Apps connect to servers to stream content is quite complicated.

The CPU must have the data resident in local memory so that the desired result can be accessed.
The com traffic between a local PC and a server requires a serious understanding of computer science.

A smartphone is a computer. It has a CPU and must process data in the same manner as a desktop PC.
Computers use a process called the Stored Program Concept.

The Modern Apps that reside on a desktop PC can be found by unhiding folders and system folders.

    Local Disk C > Users > (Username) > AppData > Local > (Folder Listing)
    Local Disk C > Users > (Username) > AppData > Local > Packages

    Hope this helps.

Windows 10 as a main OS?

Thanks for the links, interesting, but far more in depth than what I meant to say, to illustrate what I mean when I say the icon that represents an "application" is a type of shortcut, is it must go to a server to function. Disconnect from the internet or LTE and they won't work. They all need access to a server to function unlike a program that is resident on a computer.

Thanks, ok, it depends however on the Modern / Universal App. They don't all need access to an external server. Windows 10 is very definitely heavily dependent on internet access. There are many Universal Apps in 10 that function locally, however. They function ok with the net plug pulled.

But maybe the point is missed. All desktop Programs / Modern Apps ... all of them, exist and are run from a local data storage device. Personal Computers are not dumb terminals on a VAX system.

The metro / modern App is a program that is resident the same as a desktop Windows 7 program executable. Just because there is no .exe file doesn't mean that it is not a launchable program.

Due to the construction of how a sandboxed app is coded,
there is no specific executable binary file as Win32 programs are constructed.

    Local Disk C > Users > (Username) > AppData > Local > (Folder Listing)
    Local Disk C > Users > (Username) > AppData > Local > Packages

You will be able to see any existing App from these locations.

WinRT (modern) Apps are coded differently from Win32 programs
but functionally require the same processes to work.

Apologies to glennc and everyone for ranting or going off topic.

Windows 10 can and will be a fine Operating System to use as a main OS.

There is no getting around the fact that 10 is a part of the Microsoft multidevice ecosystem.
And that 10 will continue to evolve further mobile, touch, pen, and dna technologies.

I am an old dinosaur who has found something likeable in another system.
Also not a fan of all the cloud activity.

You can't do this with 8.1 or 10.
