Windows 10: Windows 10 assigning C: to recovery partition

Folks, I'm running Windows 10, I don't know the build but I'm pretty good keeping up with the updates. The machine is a Dell Precision M6800 there are 2 physical drives in the machine, an SSD for C & a magnetic for D with 32GB of memory. Windows crashed due to a H/W error, was doing a WinRE & crashed again. Now it's in the infinite WinRE loop. I know my C: drive Volume 2 currently assigned D: is intact and the Windows\System directory looks ok. I've tried scannow, the analysis runs but it can't complete the repair. I've done a chkdsk which r

Failure to apply update due to recovery partition issue?

My suggestion would be to:

1) Disable WinRE

2) Delete partitions 4 and 5.

3) Extend the C drive to utilize the unallocated space (minus 750 MB)

4) Create a Recovery partition in that 750 MB unallocated space.

Step 1:

To disable WinRE, run:

• reagentc /disable
  

Next, check if winre.wim has been moved to the c:\windows\system32\Recovery folder. To do so, run:

• dir c:\windows\system32\Recovery /a
  

Please post the outputs.

 

How To: Create recovery partition.

it worked when i copied all the files of the disk to the recovery partition i created, but i had to use WinPE tab to add the entry.

Type: WIM Image (Ramdisk)
Name: Recovery
Path: Z:\Sources\boot.wim
and hit Add Entry
I tried it in VirtualBox and it worked.
At first, it would add a second "Windows 7" entry to the list, but when the installation is finished, the old one is deleted. (I formatted only C: partition)

For the convenience of not having to use the installation media for startup repairs. But you should be able to use your installation media to do whatever the recovery partition does(including startup repairs). AFAIK. I could be wrong about that though.

I'm not sure if I follow you there. But if you clean install Windows 10 there will be at least 3 partitions.

• (EFI System Partition)
• (Primary Partition)
• (Recovery/OEM Partition)

If you install from an OEM installation media there might(should?) be 4 partitions. Since there might(should?) be a Recovery partition and an OEM partition.
