  1. Windows 10 - August 2019 Forced Update - All files, most programs missing/deleted

So last night Microsoft did a forced update. I delayed it 3 times until ready to retire for the evening, and then rebooted with updates to start the process while I went to bed. This morning I woke up, tried to log in, and got an error message several times in succession saying it could not log in. I searched for the error message on my phone and found advice (because apparently, there are many, many, many people who have had this same problem) and the first recommended step was to reboot to see if it auto-magically-fixed itself.

So I did. And this time it let me log in. Yaaay. However, after a long log-in wait, I was greeted with an utterly blank background, absolutely none of my files on the desktop - or anything else, shortcuts, etc. Nothing in downloads, nothing in files, etc. Additionally, several of my startup programs are not there, and most of my installed applications are no longer available. (A quick aside: ya know, I've been working on Microsoft Windows computers for 20+ years now and am continually amazed at the number of critical failures, bugs and assorted issues that consistently arise from the MSFT update process.. Maybe some more resources at Microsoft should be devoted to this process, eh?)

In any event, other than all of my work, personal files, settings and hundreds of gigs of applications being unavailable, the system seems to otherwise be working. I did yet more searching, and after snooping around my primary drive was able to find a user 50+ gig user profile that contained all of my files. Since my latest backup was at least a couple of weeks old, the first thing I did was to copy all of those files to an external drive. I have otherwise tried not to make any changes to the system, and after a 2+ hour cycle, the copying is finally done.

When looking at account > sync your settings is does display the message "You are logged on with a temporary profiles. Roaming options are currently unavailable." From my research, people have suggested that yet another reboot my result in auto-magically restoring access to my files, settings and applications. However, I wanted to check in with the community here and find out if there is anything else I should do before rebooting. I haven't gone ahead and just "tried it" yet because a) earlier I was unable to log in at all. and b) if it doesn't work, reinstalling all of my working environments, applications, etc will take several days worth of work and hundreds of gigs of bandwidth. For any of you superstar MVPs that for some reason help out the various victims of Microsoft's updates - first, thank you - second, in all of your experience detailing similar situations, is there anything else to do before I again reboot? The backup of main files is done - anything else?

    Thanks in advance.

    James

PS. Microsoft - please please please work on your update process. It seriously blows my mind that here we still are, with serious, debilitating issues like this continuing to arise for so many users that trust you with their data.

    :)

    Windows 10 forced download

^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.
