Windows 10: Windows 10 automatic backup error 0x80070015 - Thank you for the Thread

For three months - I struggled with the infamous "backup error 0x80070015". The thread (associated link immediately below) is among the most valuable and useful discussions I have found on the internet and the purpose of this post is to thank "hsb3852," "Jimmy Neutron," and "DLB26" - in particular for their contributions.

Among the most valuable elements of the discussion were the extraordinary and 100% consistently irrelevant and unhelpful MS "responses." I have found other discussions on this matter going back years. It is remarkable and unbelievable that MS can be so comfortable with failure to respond to well thought out appeals for help over a period of years. I am only sorry it took me a couple months to stumble across this thread.


As this post is written- my first backup in the year 2018 is now 31% complete - and the matter has been as simple as unchecking the system image box and ensuring that the volume shadow copy setting is correct. Ironically, I had fixed that matter 6 weeks ago (why MS defaults would "set" items like this - buried in "services" - to "manual" v. "automatic... I will never know); however, the missing piece of the system image box precluded resolution.


Again - many thanks to hsb3852 for persisting and pushing through (some two years ago). Thought you should know that in July 2018- your efforts are helping folks.

I've had the same problem as everyone else in this thread. I found this suggestion (proposed by Sachin Venkatesh, MS, back in 2015) worked for me:

Follow the steps to check if the backup service is started.

• Press Windows + R keys, type services.msc.
• search Volume Shadow Copy and double click on it.
• Set the Startup type to Automatic.
• Click on Start in Service status and check.

Mine was set to Manual... I changed it to Automatic and the backup immediately started running.

Shortly after my last post on 25-July-2016, I disabled the automatic Windows 10 backup, and am relying on my non-MS backup to my network drive, as well as some files to Dropbox and OneDrive.

Following this latest round of postings I decided to re-enable my automatic MS backup to see if the problem still exists, or magically disappeared after a Windows 10 Automatic Update, like the Windows key/Start menu issue I posted about in the thread given
earlier in this thread (that issue stopped occurring on 17-August-2016 after an update, and has remained working properly ever since).

My automatic Windows 10 backup STILL fails with error 0x80070015.

After this test, I have again disabled the automatic MS backup.

Everything else on my PC (Windows OS, apps) all work fine now, aside from this issue.

It's all very well giving me links to articles about how to perform backups, but they don't solve my issue one bit.

Why am I getting this error 0x80070015? How do I FIX it?

Why did it only first appear after I upgraded from Windows 7 (where my backup worked fine) to Windows 10??? And why does it persist?
