Windows 10 Automatic Updates causing problems on limited data plan

    Hello

I have been searching this for awhile now but can't seem to find a reasonable solution.

My internet on my computer is connected via my mobile phone through tethering. It works well for my needs and I have limited data. Windows 10 Automatic Updates has been a problem for quite some time. I am dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 10 and have not used Windows 10 hardly at all because of these automatic updates. As soon as I log into Windows 10, the updating begins and this sucks up all of my data.... so I end up having no internet for the whole rest of the month because Windows sucked it all up. I understand microsoft is concerned about security and all that, but risking my computer and it's data to malware, viruses, security breaches etc etc is my business and my decision. If I get a virus or security breach, big deal. All my important data is backed up. But I'm digressing.

The bottom line, is that the automatic updates and sucking up all of my data is unacceptable and I'm trying to find a way to take control of them. During the beginning of the month, when my data has just reset, I cannot have windows downloading anything. During the last few days of my data cycle, before my plan resets, is when it's best to download. I have suggestions in forums of how to completely shut it off, but I don't want to completely shut it off. I only want to be able to control when the updates are more appropriate.

I have noticed that windows removed the metered connection option so that is no longer of any use to me. Previously when I wanted to update I would simply turn the metered connection off and allow the updates to come on in.

Next week I am building a computer with hardware that only supports Windows 10 (Intel Optane for example), so as much as I would LOOOOOVE to keep using Windows 7, many of my new toys won't support it.

So.... is there a way I can take control of these updates? If worst comes to worse, I will just stick with my windows 7.

    :)

Windows 10 Automatic Updates causing problems on limited data plan

    Vista Automatic Updating Error

    Resolution Suggestion:

    # To resolve this problem, make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started..

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

    2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

    4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

    5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

    6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

    7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
