Windows 10: Windows 10 background is black and start bar flashes upon turning on

Hi all,

I've been frantically googling this via my phone and I can't find a solution that works so I'll try to be as succinct as possible here.

Starting this afternoon, when I turn my PC on and win10 boots, the login screen takes a lot longer to load than it usually does, and when it does load my background is pure black and my taskbar flashes over and over again. If I leave it for about 15 minutes, it eventually goes back to normal. I'm backing up my recent files at the moment but I need to fix this, I can't be stuck in a situation where my PC is unusable for about 15 minutes from the moment I power it on.

What I have done (based on other threads I've found):

• Ran SFC and DISM - neither found anything.
• Uninstalled the last quality update.
• Attempted to uninstall the last feature update but it couldn't.
• Attempted to restore to a point from last week but it couldn't complete the operation.
• Reinstalled my display drivers.
• Ran a scan with Malwarebytes (From what I can gather this is a windows 10 file corruption issue, but I didnt want to rule out malware)
• Checked my SSD via CrystalDisk but that didn't find any problems.

I haven't tried booting to safe mode yet, I'm going to try that next as soon as I've got my files backed up. The only potential solution I've found online is a full windows 10 reset, which I really don't want to do unless necessary. Does anyone know of a way to fix this problem that doesn't involve going for the nuclear solution?

Hardware incase its relevant:

• Nvidia GTX 2080
• Ryzen 3700x
• Not sure what else you might need here but ask away if needs be.

In the meantime, we suggest that you try to check if the "Show Windows Background" option is turned on. Follow the steps below:

Start Bar not working after update install in Windows 10


Hi, tried as you suggest. It starts and says Checking application registration... and the green progress bar just goes on and on (let it run for over two hours) and never gets to the next step. Any other suggestions?
