  1. Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005

    Hi all

My company recently installed Windows 10 from a network location. I am a local admin and everything seems fine apart from I am unable to use the built-in Windows disc imaging function.

Each time I get to the point of making a backup of "System Reserved" a message appears with the code "0x80070005". I've tried all kinds to troubleshoot this (checked permissions, tried different backup discs etc) but have got nowhere. Could it still be a permissions issue due to the install coming from an image?

I unhid the "System Volume Information" folder but the permissions on it look OK. "SYSTEM" is the owner, with full control, and I even added in my local admin account with full control but still have no luck. Any ideas anyone? It backs up files on the disc fine right up until it tries to take a system image, at which point it falls over. I've attached a screenshot of the error. Also, Event Viewer shows this entry:

"The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎07‎-‎27T14:28:55.214053900Z' has failed with following error code '0x80070005' (General access denied error). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."

    Thanks & regards

    :)

    Access denied error code

I am getting the access denied error code (0x80070005) when I am trying to do a system backup apparently keeping it from completing the backup. I found a thread that had a fix for this, but was more related to the Windows Update with Windows 7 and Vista.
I have Windows 10 and I was wondering if that fix will solve my problem as well.

    Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005

    Hi allistair78,

I only have two suggestions and the first one is a stab in the dark:

    1. Check the permissions for this service (only because it was a network install):

    Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005 [IMG]

    2. If you ultimately can't resolve your issue, make the switch to this great 3rd-party (free) backup software:

Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

    Good luck!

  5. Hi aardvark

Thanks for replying. I checked the permissions on that service and it was set to "local system account" with "allow service to interact with desktop" checked. Still no joy!

I won't be able to use Macrium free as this is a corporate install.

    Thanks for your help though.

    Regards

    Hi again alistair,

Can you check to make sure you System Reserved partition has at least 50 MBs of free space? This is a requirement for the shadow volume copy process to start backing up the partition (or at least it was in the past). Now, in the past, Windows gave you a very specific warning about the free space requirement but that could have changed along the way. Might be worth checking. Here's mine for comparison:

  7. Hi aardvark

I had some symptoms of hardware failure today, so I have installed Win 10 clean onto a brand new SSD from a DVD rather than network location.

Guess what? I still can't back up! Same error. I have 450MB recovery partition and 99MB EFI System partition showing in disk manager. I think I am going to forget this whole thing!

    Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005

Well, if you are trying to back up to a local source, there should be no issue after a clean install IMHO. So, I just did a test backup (using the inherent Windows 7/10 Backup Program) to my local USB3 SSD without issue. However, if you are trying to do a backup to a network location, that may be a completely different story. In any event, good luck with your issue.

  9. Strange indeed. It's to a local USB backup device...

So, what's left to compare? I am a local account admin. I do not use any login credentials. Win 10 Pro x64.

Hmm... Do you have any old backups that are resident on that local USB backup drive?
If so, could you delete them and try again?

Per chance, is your local USB drive one of those specialized backup drives (ie, my passport, my book, etc) that contains proprietary firmware (and sometimes proprietary backup software) that has caused access issues for many? FYI, mine is a standard SSD (840 EVO) plugged into a USB3 drive enclosure.

Also, I found a thread where someone ran sdclt.exe from an elevated command prompt to get around the access denied issue:

    Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005 [IMG]

When the above is executed, you jump right to the screen below:

    Windows 10 Backup 0x80070005 [IMG]

If this works, I have no idea if one will be able to actually restore the created image if a permission problem exists.

You might also want to check your Event Viewer to see if any other event notifications occurred around the same time the access denied message was received.

  11. Sincerely appreciate all your help on this one!

The backup HDD has been completely formatted so has no legacy content on it. Sadly the event logs are no more specific than "The backup was not successful. The error is: Access is denied. (0x80070005)."

What exactly is sdclt.exe? Looks like it might be worth a go before I completely give up. The only other thing the tech guys mentioned here was that it could be caused by a group policy. I will have to find out what groups I am in. Another possibility is Kaspersky interfering with it, but I am unable to pause protection as it's controlled under a group policy too!

Hmm... Enterprise may be a completely different animal. You may need help from someone using that version because there are some differences (at least I'm told there are).

Anyway, check these group policy setting:

If no joy here, get you techs involved and/or wait for someone with Enterprise experience.

    Cheers and good luck!
