    Windows 10 - Backup/Restore/Recovery (Computer Dummy)

I would like to enquire how to go about creating a system restore/backup/recovery for installed Windows 10.

Two of my computers (Lenovo and 2x Medion) have a factory installed Windows 8 in a recovery designated partition (but both systems later updated to 8.1 - but not the Recovery part, still Windows 8) – the other Medion computer has a DVD Disc with Windows 7. All Computers now have Windows 10.

I downloaded the free version of AOMEI Backupper and (hopefully?) made a System Backup of my computer with Windows 8.1 before downloading Windows 10. (Just in case - but will have to overwrite this to do W10 Backup due to limited space) .

Is this the correct way to do it for Windows 10 ?

    Or somehow burn a Disc?

And what about the old Windows 8 system recovery partition on two of my computers?

And does the AOMEI System Backup include everything = also all files – or just System (and need to do a File backup)?

Thanks in advance for all advice and help

    :)

I have no issues with restoring from a backup I create with Paragon Backup and Recovery on Windows 10. I do not use the Windows 10 backup and restore component.

  3. "Back up and Restore (Windows 7)" present in Control Panel (Windows 10)

    Hi Collins,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Backup and Restore (Windows 7) : "Windows 7" in the bracket doesn't mean it will revert or restore to Windows 7. It states that in Windows 10 there is also an option to backup and restore the way it was in Windows 7. Getting the feedback
from several customers using Windows 10, Microsoft has retained the earlier Windows 7 style for backup and restoring the files.

Note: Windows 10 has two ways of Recovery options, one is through
    Update and Recovery
options using the Windows recovery environment and the other is through the earlier style
    Backup and Recovery (Windows 7)

If you used Backup and Restore to back up files or create system image backups in previous versions of Windows, your old backup is still available in Windows 10. To get to it, right-click the
Start button, and then select Control Panel
    > Backup and Restore (Windows 7).

Hope this information is helpful. Keep us posted to help you better.

  4. Windows 10 - Backup/Restore/Recovery

Once you upgrade, your former Recovery partitions will be of no use to you -- as they would only reset the machines to their original states when you first used them with Windows 8. At that point, you might as well remove those partitions to make better use of the disk space.

As to backup, I've personally never trusted Windows software to do that and have always used third party product. My current favorite is Macrium Reflect -- for which a free version is now available.

Don't know how AOMEI System Backup works, but if it's like MR (which I suspect it is), it backs up entire partitions, including all the files contained in those partitions.

While you MIGHT be able to do image backups to disk, even with Blue-Ray disks, you only have 25GB or 50GB capacities -- the larger of which might be able to hold an entire system backup. Myself, I back up to an external drives and have made a Recovery USB stick (using MR) that I can boot from to Restore the PC from those backups, should Windows fail to start properly.

  5. You can just use the built in System Image Backup to create an image. To be honest I always use the built in one and have never needed a third party alternative because it's never failed me, I've always had trouble with third party ones. I must be the rare odd one who does *Confused lol

Macrium Reflect restores a backup in less than 5 minutes. The Windows version is about 35 minute. MR is free so why not use it.

    +1 on Macrium.
I used Win7 built in backup some time ago and targetted the backup to my newish 2.5GB Seagate external drive. Worked once but then on second attempt NT Backup decided it did not liek partitions > 2GB, at least according to the error code.
Might still buy it but on the free version now.

Thanks to everyone for their reply - really sorry about the delay in answering - I apologise for this.

I downloaded both Macrium and AOMEI to check out. I found Macrium to be more complicated - needing more tech knowledge based decisions which I felt I did not have - or at least was unsure what the right thing was to do. AOMEI had a more straightforward and simple User face so I went with that (after first reading lots of feedback about AOMEI just to be sure) and made backup of Desktop W10 with that.

However, I have just read an AOMEI Forum report/Thread from someone who reported that re-installing the W10 System Backup did not work (correctly). someone from AOMEI has replied with how to do something to resolve this problem (http://www.aomeitech.com/forum/discu...-backup#Item_4)

So I am going to have to find out how to do a correct backup using free version of Macrium Reflect - because I no longer trust my AOMEI backup (for my desktop W10). For the the other device I am at the moment in the process of trying to find out how to move System to a SSD and for this I am starting another thread under Drivers and Hardware on this Forum.

Once again many thanks to all

If you have the free external/NAS hard drive space being unused, nothing wrong with keeping an image from both programs.
