Windows 10: Windows 10 cannot login or use admin profile

Yesterday my laptop's CPU usage went up and the fan was working really hard. I was working with web app in Visual Studio, so I decided to sign out of the admin profile I was using and sing back in to make sure there are no left over thread running from VS.

When I tried to log back in, the screen was stuck on the Welcome! loading view. After a long while, I forced quit the laptop with the power button, waited for a bit and tried again. Every time I try to log into the admin profile, it gets stuck on the Welcome screen. I tried running booting in safe mode and rolling back to a recovery state fortunately I had one from 5 days earlier, but nothing helped.

I do have a local user account on that laptop, which I never used before. I can log into it and access all data the local user permissions allow to view. I tried accessing the admin profile through C:\Users\ in File Explorer. An admin elevation pop-up appears, I provide the password, and the File Explorer shows a really slow moving loading bar, which results in nothing once it reaches 100%.

On the local user, whenever I try to run anything with admin privileges, the screen deems as expected and the pop-up appears as normal, but once correct password is provided, the pop-up disappears, but the deemed screen remains until I press ctrl+alt+del, or the process times out I assume, it disappears after a longer while. Once it disappears, whatever I was trying to run, didn't work. I tried to elevate the privileges both with the admin profile, and the Microsoft account one.

My worst case scenario is that the hard drive HDD has been damaged somehow, resulting in corruption of the whole admin profile. But the fact that the Microsoft account elevation doesn't work is especially weird to me. It seems like it should be something, that doesn't need to read the user directory to validate, but I'm not sure how it works.


Is there any way I can further diagnose my computer or somehow enforce the admin privileges without the need of a password?

Cannot Login to Admin Account - Profile Cannot Be Loaded

After reading https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...-error-message I looked in the registry at the ProfileImagePath values and only saw 'Alan' account that is the regular user. Strange that 'Bob' admin login that is displayed as login option at startup is not listed in ProfileImagePath.

You may not be able to access the options to perform the above method due to the local user profile status.
Enable built-in administrator by following the steps below, create a new administrator user profile and check if the issue is resolved.

Step 1: Enable built-in administrator account.

• Open elevated command prompt by entering Safe mode with Command prompt.
  To go to Safe mode, use the power button on the sign-in screen and press
  Shift (key on the keyboard) + Restart. This will take you to the recovery boot menu. Click
  Troubleshoot> Advanced options> Startup settings.
  You then see a list where you can choose Safe Mode with Command prompt.
• Type the following command: net user administrator /active:yes to activate the built-in administrator.
• Login into the built in administrator user profile and create a new user profile with administrator privileges (steps given below).
• Then lock your screen by pressing Windows key + L keys on the keyboard and sign-in into the
  Administrator account.
• Disable built in administrator account by typing the command:
  net user administrator /active:no
  in the Command prompt (Admin).

Step 2: To create a new administrative user account
follow the steps below:

• Open Elevated command prompt by pressing Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard and select
  Command prompt (Admin) from the context menu.
• Type net user NewAccount password /add and click
  Enter.
• Type net localgroup Administrators NewAccount /add and click
  Enter.
• Log off from the system and login to the new user account.
