  1. Windows 10 - Can't access secondary drive HDD or SSD after BIOS update

    Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to get this resolved...

I updated my BIOS today (AMD/Gigabyte mobo) and on the reboot it booted my main SSD (Windows 10 OS drive) but not my other SSD (Gaming) or backups HDD. It initially loaded them as USB drive.

I then went in to the BIOS and turned off the hot swap/plug option but still they are not showing or showing as unallocated drives.

Need to assign them a drive letter again I hope?

Any tips to get this resolved without losing any data or where best to post this question.

    TIA

  2. Windows 10 1909 Causes Secondary Hard Drive to not be Recognized

Installing the Windows 10 1909 Update causes my secondary hard drive to not be recognized.

    Steps to confirm issue:

    • Secondary drive not visible in Windows Explorer
    • Secondary drive not visible in device manager
    • Secondary drive not visible in disk manager

    Steps to replicate issue:

    • Installing 1909 update

    Steps to resolve issue:

    • Uninstall 1909 update

Since updates can only be delayed for so long, an actual fix would be appreciated.

  3. Accessing BIOS menu

Problems solved! Yes, connecting a PS-2 keyboard directly into a USB port on the PC, rather than using a wireless keyboard or connecting the PS-2 keyboard through an external USB hub connection activated the BIOS menu from F10 on the keyboard. Thank you
very much for that suggestion. But that in itself did not fix the underlying problem of how to get the PC to use the new SSD drive as the boot drive. For that I am indebted to DaveM121's suggestion to change the SATA connection on the motherboard from the
HDD to the SSD. Let me explain for those who may face this in the future. My HP was built in 2009 but is running Windows 10 with a 1TB HDD. The BIOS and hardware are all original. The issue was the HDD was getting extremely slow - about 5 minutes to load Windows
and Chrome. So I installed a 1 TB SSD as the second hard drive. I then used software (either in Windows - mbr2gpt /convert, or Minitool Partition) to clone the HDD to the SSD. However, while that produced a SSD which was a carbon copy of the HDD, it changed
the disk to GPT from MBR. GPT is the preferred Windows mode because it runs faster than MBR (it is claimed). But while the SSD had Windows 10 on it, the PC would not boot because the BIOS is in Legacy mode, not the more modern UEFI. Because I could not access
the BIOS from the Windows Recovery mode in Settings or with a wireless keyboard, the conversion of the SSD to GPT mode would not allow the system to find Windows. on the SSD. Solution - I converted both the HDD (C drive) and the clone SSD drive (H drive) back
to MBR, which is recognized by Legacy but not UEFI. Then using DaveM121's idea, I switched the SATA cables on the two drives to fool the motherboard to think the SSD was the C drive. The motherboard did recognize the SSD as the C drive and the HDD drive as
the H drive. Since Windows 10 was on the SSD clone and the BIOS looked for the C drive to boot the system, Windows started from the C drive SSD. I thus did not change anything in the BIOS, which is still running in Legacy mode. The difference - HDD took 5
minutes to load Windows and Chrome, SSD takes less than 1 minute total. I'll now use the 1 TB HDD as a spare drive or for intensive photo or music files. Thanks very much guys!!!

  4. Windows 10 - Can't access secondary drive HDD or SSD after BIOS update

Windows 10 can not optimize HDD, says it is a SSD Help

    Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Appreciate your efforts to work on this issue.

    • Does the BIOS recognizes the disk as HDD or SSD?

Suggest you to set the Optimize Drives Service to start automatically from the services window to check if that helps.

    1. Open the run window, type ‘services.msc’ and press Enter.
    2. Search for Optimize Drives Service and select the start-up type as automatic. Also ensure to start the service.

If you have set SATA controller to AHCI mode for Solid State Drive, in Device Manager it would show as SATA hard disk.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Click start, type “Defragment” and click “Defragment and Optimize your drives”.
    2. On the “Defragment and Optimize your drives” window. Make sure that your SSD is categorized as an SSD.
    3. If it’s not, then you can set it as a SSD on your bios. This way, you don’t have to exclude your SSD or disable any scheduled defragmentation.
Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring
of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

    Hope this helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed.
