Windows 10: Windows 10 - Cant adjust brightness

I recently purchased an hp pavilion desktop + 24" monitor combo. Its running windows 10. When I first boot it up, I looked for updates. There were 8 updates. I updated everything. Both before and after updating, there was no option to change the brightness. I spent a while googling ways to fix it. I did this.....Control Panel > Device Manager > Display Adapters >Graphics card> Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick. Choose Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. After this, the brightness tab showed up. The only problem is, it doesn't do anything. 0% and 100% are both the same. It is so bright it's hard to look at the screen.

My monitor is a 24" HP 24uh. According to someone on another forum I asked on, it's an older monitor and many people have had this issue. He suspected that it was too old for the updated drivers to work, and I may be out of luck. I can't continue using this computer when it's so bright it gives me a headache. I purchased it for my daughter to use for school, but it's so bright it hurts her eyes.

I'm not sure where to go next. I believe everything is updated, and nothing helps. It's connected by VGA. I was told to try an HDMI, but I'm not sure how that would fix it. Any help is much appreciated!

malfunction of screen brightness button

cant adjust screen brightness on my laptop lenovo windows 8.1 but it was upgraded to windows 10 either with the brightness button on the keyboard or from setting

After updated to windows 10 yesterday, i cant adjusting my pc brightness. it is cant be done either by using shortcut key or the manually adjusting.

The attention and help is kindly appreciated.

 

Did the computer come with Win10 or did you upgrade to it ? Did the brightness control EVER work ?Did you try this driver from HP Support ? It's old but 8.1 compatible so should be ok for 10

It came with windows 10. I think it's called 137cb and the monitor was hp 24uh.

The brightness control wasn't even there out of the box. Even after searching for updates, it didn't show up until I did the fix I posted in my original post. Should I still download that driver you linked?

 

Would switching from the included VGA to an HDMI cable possibly solve it? I would expect that it should work out of the box, but it definitely does not.

 

If it's this one, HP has dropped driver/software support. But this is not an all-in-one. If the HDMI cable did not work, try the prev posted monitor driver. You can always roll back, if it doesn't help. You can block Windows Updates to it, if it does. Just download, install and restart, as instructed.

I have a few HP's, incl a real all-in-one (box in built into monitor) and a couple laptops but they all have either an AMD or Intel display adapter. You only had a choice of MS Basic Display Driver in Device Manager ?

 

Intel HD graphics 530 is the only option besides MS basic display

 

I downloaded it and it didn't do anything.

 

So I just got it using the hardware keys from the monitor itself. They were unresponsive earlier, but are working now. Thanks all!

 

Good for You but when you click Action Center/All settings/System you should have a brightness slider like in screener below. Insure that your monitor is recognized. Otherwise, you either have a keyboard (is it non-OEM ?) or OS related issue but at least you have some control now. *Redface)
