Windows 10: Windows 10 cant be installed on GPT - Cant boot dvd in UEFI mode

Hello Guys,

recently i purchased a new laptop that came with win10.

The laptop is Lenovo z50-70

Unfortunately my brother managed to download so many viruses, that I decided to do clean Win 10 install. I had no important data on the laptop and I thought it would be the easiest solution.

So I inserted Win 10 dvd that I got with the laptop into the drive and went on with the process. Decided to not keep any data, formatted the drive, and when I needed to choose where I want windows installed, it told me it cannot be installed on GPT Style partition, which I found weird, because Windows was installed there before.

The partitions look currently like this:

So I did some reading and found out that I should boot in UEFI mode so that I can use the GPT style partition, however when I wanted to boot from DVD using the UEFI, it wouldnt work.

Using these boot settings:

Just a black screen with LENOVO. I tried multiple times and either nothing was happening, the PC was silent or other time the dvd drive was making rhytmical noises over and over again.
Opening the DVD tray got me this:

Got me into the windows installation, but again could not install because of GPT.

To be honest I have no idea what am I doing, but since the windows was installed there before and apparently on the GPT partition, it should be somehow possible.
Perhaps the issue lies within the DVD?
If possible I would like to avoid deleting the partitions that were there before.

Can not install Win10 preview on GPT partition

So I managed to get dual boot to work for the life of me i cant remember how. Wasnt getting insider builds updates so deleted the partition to install latest iso. Nothing installs.

My settings:

Uefi bios. Secure & fast boot disabled

Have gpt partition created

Used rufus to create boot usb using:

Gpt uefi

Fat32

This just goes in constant reboot

Have also tried vmware. This now no longer works, i cant install a win10 preview on virtual drive

Im not being forced to press the upgrade popup am i?

i built a new pc with asus motherboard asus h 170m plus with uefi bios n intel i 5 6400 processor n seagate single 3 tb internal hdd . when i tried installing win 10 home from microsoft supplied usb it installed in mbr format n only 2 tb was usable rest
800 gb was marked as unallocated space . so i tried to install win 10 after converting hdd in gpt format with cmd . though the usb is detected as kdi msftwin10 pmap in uefi mode after setup starts it says windows cant be installed in this disc as it is gpt
. now how to install win 10 in my new pc in uefi gpt mode so i can use all 3 tb

 

Hi, Thanks for all the info. Some basic questions:
1. As it's a new laptop, could you not have used the manufacturer's recovery partition to restore it to 'as bought'? Or was it bought without an OS installed?
2. Are you sure the DVD that came with it is actually a Win 10 install DVD, and not something else?

3. If you wish to clean install, suggest you get a Win 10 DVD or bootable disk thus, making sure the language is appropriate:

4. Win 10 needs to be installed to unallocated space. For this reason and to ensure removal of all nasty things you don't want, you should delete all existing partitions (other than any manufacturer's recovery partition, although that no longer seems to exist if it ever did).

Finally to make things easier in the future, disk imaging is very strongly and repeatedly recommended here. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images. That was you can restore a non-bootable/not working PC to a previously working state fairly quickly without technical help (barring hardware failure other than the drive).

Note - a better way to post screenshots is to use the icon to the left of the video icon above your post 'Insert image'.

 

Hello, trying to use the restore to factory settings does not work. Something about missing partition I think, however I did not remove any partitions ,just formatted the one that contained the OS.

The dvd that came with it is Win 10 install DVD. When I boot it in legacy mode, it behaves exactly as expected.

 

You do not need to change the boot order of drives or enable "Legacy Support".

Go back into the UEFI and restore the default settings.

Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI mode, so you can use the GPT partition style. This option lets you keep the existing partition style and lets you use the PC’s UEFI firmware features.

I can use either win 64bit default settings or other OS default settings.
I suppose I should use the win 64 bit ones?

 

When you get to the screen that lists all the partitions existing on the hard drive, press Shift + F10 (you might have to also press the FN key to get the actual F10 - Shift+FN+F10). This will open a command prompt Window. Run the following commands that will erase the entire hard drive:

Diskpart
Select Disk 0
Clean
Exit
Exit

When you get back to the screen with the list of partitions, click the Refresh function. You should see Disk 0 listed as nothing but unallocated space. Highlight the unallocated space and click Next to let Windows 10 create the partitions it wants and proceed with the install.

 

Okay, I used the defaults:







Bu I got the EFI DVD/CDROM boot failed message.

 

I suppose this will remove the factory partitions and wont use the UEFI features?

If you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS mode.

 

In that case I ll need to finds USB stick.

Any reason why it would display the efi boot failed?

 

Media Creation Tool cant find my USB stick 8gb Kingston DTSE9.
I am doing this on Win 7 machine.

 

Had same issue. If you retry on Win 10 machine your issue will disappear. If you don't have access to a Win 10 machine go ISO route. Not sure purpose of limitation, likely due to free offer expiring.

If you use another machine make sure you request bit count based on target machine. It will offer you software based on machine creating tool.

 

I will use Rufus and use the ISO. Not today though. It is late here. I ll get to it tomorrow.
