Windows 10 can't find external USB 3.0 drives...

I just upgraded from Windows 7 PRO to Windows 10. I notice that my external USB 3.0 drives can't be found. Before the upgrade it was ok. The only external device that does show is a Sandisk FIT USB 2.0 stick. Has this happened to anyone?

    :)

  3. Windows 10 not seeing some external drives

After upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, windows sees my two Seagate Expansion external USB 3.0 Drives. Windows does not see my two Seagate Backup Plus external USB 3.0 drives until I unplug then plug either the USB cable or power cable. Everything worked
fine in Window 7 Pro. The four are plugged into a 4 port PCI USB 3.0 Card. At a loss as to why now not being seen.

Do you have any hardware that is showing missing device drivers in Device Manager?

  5. check the device manager

right click start select device manager
if you have any yellow exclamation marks next to devices theyre either aren't capable with 10 or incorrectly installed... if they show up as other devices with question marks that means windows didn't configure the devices properly and you might have to reseat some internal hardware if desktop its pretty easy to do but laptops are harder to reallocate things

also if the smbus device is standard or any device has Standard in the name its a good chance windows 10 installed generic drivers which don't give full functionality to the devices

if you are running on an intel processor try download the MEI device direct from intel and the intelRST.. the mei handle the intel naming of the motherboard system devices including the usb controller the intel RST monitors the harddrive smart status within windows

I am not running an Intel CPU. It's an AMD FX-8320. No ! marks or ? are showing.

  7. AMD has known issues not being configured properly check the AMD site they should have a combined driver download to use

that's how other amd users got their stuff to work porperly

Windows 10 can't find external USB 3.0 drives...

I thought I would try something. I plugged these drives into a USB 2.0 port and they came up without a problem. Well, I won't have USB 3.0 speed, but it works.

I think this PC has other problems. I had a startup problem in which it would go no further past the starting windows screen. I reinstalled Windows as a new install. The data drive D: could not be found, so I took it out and Windows would not boot. I disconnected that drive and the PC booted fine. It seems that the dead drive has to be connected for the PC to boot. We learn something new every day.

Do you have any reference to a USB 3 controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device manager? (I do.)

Does the D drive show up in Disk Management (in Computer Management, in Windows Administrative Tools)? Could be something as simple as not having a drive letter assigned. (I haven't had that problem on my two desktops.)

For USB3 drivers, go to the mobo's manufaturer website and look for the drivers specific to the mobo's model. If the manufaturer does not have any Win10-specific drivers, try the Win8 version. If there is still no Win8 version, then use the Win7 version. Don't go below Win7 (very unlikely there would be any in the first place).

  11. Upgraded to win 10 yesterday from 7 Home Premium. When I boot up, it no longer recognizes my Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 drive. But if I unplug the drive and plug it back in, it recognizes it fine. Checked in device manager, and saw no warning signs for any USB devices, checked each one anyway and all said drivers were up to date. Any ideas?

  12. Been working on this a little more...no solution yet, but more info: I was running 7 on my Lenovo Y580, and upgraded to 10 on 8/31. When I boot up in the morning, my Seagate Backup Plus USB 3 external desktop drive is not recognized. In the device manager I see the yellow triangle and get the "device descriptor request failed" error msg. When I open Properties it says the device is working properly, but it doesn't show in File Explorer, my daily backup to it won't work (I'm using the Windows Backup), and the power light stays off. Tried updating the driver, but it says my driver is up to date (date on driver is 8-17-2015, version 10.0.10240.16461). Interestingly, if I unplug the USB cable I hear the tone telling me I've unplugged, and then when I plug it back in the power light comes on, windows recognizes it, the device manager name changes to "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller 1.0 (Microsoft)", and all proceeds as normal. This does not happen on a warm boot (restart) or when I wake the computer from sleep. Only when I power it up in the morning. I suppose I could live with unplugging and replugging every morning, but it would nice to have it working correctly. Any ideas?

Windows is possibly booting too quickly, meaning that the external devices are not detected before the cold boot has completed

Please disable fast boot in Windows power options. Then shutdown and do a cold boot. Please confirm whether this solves your issue.

  15. THANK YOU! I disabled the fast boot per your suggestion, and this morning when I booted up my drive was recognized just fine. This was my last buggy issue after upgrading to win 10. Gotta love these forums, and the helpful folks who populate them!
