Windows 10 ConHost.EXE Not Terminating and Filling Page Table Memory Sometimes 1000's of them!

    Hi All,

I having huge memory leak issues on Windows 10 when any program tries to execute a command that uses CONHOST.exe. I first noticed this using IBM SPSS Modeler because it executes a LOT of commands using CONHOST, but after investigating it seems it's not isolated to that application but ANY application that makes calls this way leaves a CONHOST process behind that consumes 32k of page table memory. In the end the page table gets full especially with SPSS and ends up consuming over 6GB of memory and brings my machine to a halt.

I used RamMap and ProcMon to diagnose this. The orphaned CONHOST processes are parented by various processes ie, Java, OfficeClickToRun, GitGui; there doesn't seem to be one source, but some applications make more calls than others this way and cause more issues. When I use Windows Performance Analyzer I see a lot of page table space taken by 'Unknown'. Also, logging out and back in doesn't release the page table space; I have to reboot the machine.

I saw some posts of similar behavior attributed to Aladdin Sentinel and Razer software, but my machine has neither of those.

Has anyone else seen this behavior or has any idea what might be causing these processes not to terminate?

    Thanks

    From RamMap...

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Page Table takes too much RAM.

    Hi,

High RAM usage can be caused by various factors like a malware infection and corrupted device drivers. The first step in fixing Windows 10 high memory leakage would be performing a full scan. You may install an anti-malware tool like MalwareBytes and perform
a scan. If the issue persists, we suggest that you adjust the page file size or virtual memory in Windows 10. Adjusting the page file size is known for regulating the disk usage and it dramatically improves Windows 10 performance for machines that are using
    SSD type of hard drive.

    Here's how:

    • In the search box, type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and press
      Enter.
    • Go to Advanced tab and click Change... button in the
      Virtual memory section.
    • At the top, uncheck the box right next to the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives option.
    • Select drive C: (or the drive where Windows 10 is installed).
    • Select Custom size: by ticking its radio button, and change the
Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) to the
      Recommended
value that you will find just below the Total paging file size for all drivers section.

This method will help improve the system performance of Windows 10, and will gradually decrease the freeze issues.

Let us know how it goes.
