Windows 10: Windows 10 crashes (BSOD) after clean install with error "Thread stuck in device driver"

Hi All,


I'm having HP Pavilion Laptop with following configuration

Intel i5 3230M CPU @2.60 GHz

RAM 4GB,

Radeon HD 8760M 2GB

WD HDD 1 TB

Windows 10 64 Bit


I had updated my Windows 10 and after rebooting everything was working fine but all of sudden there was BSOD and it was repetitive after every restarts. I somehow after troubleshooting disabled the Radeon HD 8670M and rebooted my laptop and it was working fine.

I tried to update the latest Radeon drivers to "Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.11.1 Optional" by disconnecting the laptop from internet, but still was getting the BSOD.


I went through lot of forums to resolve this issue, but this is really frustrating as I tried several times to install the drivers in every possible way for the Radeon GPU and yet the BSOD appears.


Any help trying to install the drivers or getting rid of the BSOD would be helpful.

Thread stuck in device driver after Windows 10 clean install, Windows won't boot

I had to do a clean install of Windows after I was having issues not getting Windows to boot. I used the Windows 10 creation tool and during the customization process (after selecting a PIN for login) my PC crashed. After the crash I got a BSOD with a
"thread stuck in device driver" error. It continuously loops and won't allow me to boot into Windows so I have no way to update my drivers or check to see which ones are causing an issue.

I keep getting the (BSOD) Blue Screen Of Death that shows the error message, "THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER"

After a reboot, the machine works fine - sometimes only for a few hours, other times up to a day or to before it seemingly inexplicably displays the BSOD again.

My System Info is as follows:

Windows 10 Pro

HP ProBook 450 G1

Intel Core i5

RAM 8 GB

64 Bit

What steps do I need to take to fix this?

Thread Stuck in Device Driver error. Outdated BIOS may also lead to this error. In this case, you might need to contact the manufacturer of your computer, or view the documentation that is included with your computer for information about the
BIOS and how to update it.

When you say you are getting failures while using Windows Update to update the drivers, have you tried to manually download and install the drivers from the device manufacturer's website? Also,
I suggest that you check Device Manager for yellow exclamation (!) mark for all hardware devices. If there is any yellow exclamation mark, then install latest drivers for that particular hardware.
