Windows 10: Windows 10 crashes when attempting to load a file onto USB flash drive.

My laptop crashes when I try to put a file onto the USB flash drive. It will start to transfer the file then immediately crashes with the Win 10 blue screen of death with an error message of "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION"


It will do this with the traditional type A USB drive and the type C USB flash drive on the laptop. I also attempted to use a USB mouse on the laptop and it will detect the mouse when I insert the USB dongle but the mouse will not work.

I believe the problem started after the most recent updates. See link below for the most recent updates from March 15, 2021.

I have used USB drives with no problem in the past until now. I have not attempted to do anything to modify Windows to correct this error. I have tried two other flash drives and both encounter this error and I believe this is an issue inherent with Windows and not the flash drives.


Info about the laptop if it helps.

Failed Media Creation Tool attempt at bootable USB flash drive

Shawn, these are the steps being referred to that NavyLCDR posted. They work for both UEFI and MBR.

Here are the steps to create a standard Windows 10 USB flash drive:

1. Use the Media Creation Tool to download and save the ISO file to your hard drive.
2. Insert the USB flash drive.
3. Open a Administrator Command Prompt and enter: diskpart (if it isn't an administrator command prompt, it will ask for administrator permission).
4. list disk
5. select disk # <- replace # with the actual disk number of the USB flash drive
6. clean <- this will erase the disk selected above, make sure you selected the USB flash drive!
7. create part pri
8. format fs=fat32 quick
9. active
10. exit
11. exit - and if the first Command Prompt was not an Administrator Command Prompt, exit that one too.
11. Mount the ISO file saved by the Media Creation Tool. If you are using Windows 8 or 10, you only have to right click on it and click on mount. If you are using Windows 7, then you must use a program like WinCDEmu to mount the ISO file:

12. Copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the USB flash drive.

That's as simple as it gets. Between steps 7 and 8 you can enter: "select part 1" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.
Between steps 8 and 9 you can enter: "assign" without quotes - but it should not be necessary.

Don't give up yet!
(i) If you used Option 1, did you get to select a USB stick in step 8? If so,
(ii) Did you reach step 11 - 'USB flash drive ready' ?

If so, you should be good to go - the USB drive should be bootable. You can check this by either examining it with file explorer, or attempting to boot your PC from it. In post 13 NAVYCLDR showed a screen shot of what the folder structure on the USB stick should look like - if it does, you should be done, but I would suggest you try to boot from it: assuming it boots up, don't proceed any further, unless you want to re-install or otherwise fix something.

I don't believe you ever explained why you wanted an install USB?

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions regarding the query:

  Do you get any error message, when you try to open the files in flash drive?
  
• 
  Can you access other USB devices connected to the computer?
  

I suggest you to check, whether USB flash drive is shown in the file explorer and try to open the files from there.

This issue could occur due to outdated, corrupted or incorrect settings of Universal Serial Bus controllers on Windows 10.

If you are unable to find the drive in File Explorer, please refer to the suggestions of ThofikhAhamad, replied on September 5, 2015, to fix your issue with flash drive.
