Windows 10 Crashing Overnight External Monitor Issue?

    Hey guys,

Every night I leave my laptop Dell XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 on overnight, in sleep mode. About a week ago, I woke in the night as the screen on my laptop had turned on, with an error message from Windows. I recall it saying about a failed update, but don't recall as I immediately shut it down given it was the middle of the night. I do remember the error message being on a white background though.

Since then, every morning when I wake and go to my laptop, the laptop screen is unresponsive, the fans are on full blast, and it's hot to touch. I have to force shut down using the power button, and power it back on where I'm greeted with the 'Windows didn't load correctly' splash page. I then restart again, and the system loads slowly.

Over the past few days I've been checking online and tried to do a number of tests, i've run virus scanners, i've run a few 'repair' commands within cmd that I'd seen online, and nothing, it's the same every morning. I have a suspicion the crash is linked to my external monitor because I unplugged a USB-C dock which is then connected to a number of peripherals, and there was no crash the next day. I'm still trying to prove this, as last night I only unplugged an external hard drive connected to the dock, and it still crashed.

Any ideas on what I should do? I left the computer in the day yesterday for 4 hours and there was no crash, so it seems it only happens overnight or it happens after more than 4 hours. Hibernate in the settings is set to be something like 30000 minutes so I don't think it's that. I viewed 'Event Viewed' and system tab, and there were these errors in the night:

USB device draining system power when system is idle. USB Device: VID: 0x5E3 PID: 0x749 REV: 0x1532 Removal action failed: SkippedAsPersistentIoObserved

The server {AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

USB device draining system power when system is idle. USB Device: VID: 0x46D PID: 0xAB7 REV: 0x19

    Removal action failed: QueryRemovalInitiated

I've updated BIOS and drivers to the latest available and the problem still persists. Is anybody able to offer guidance? I'm speaking with Dell as well but they just tell you to do 'basic' things like update drivers etc, which haven't helped.

    Thanks

    :)

    External monitor blanking often

    Hi,

Please answer these questions to assist you better.

    • What is the make and model of your computer and external monitor?
    • Have you installed all pending Windows and driver updates?
    • Do you get any error message?

I suggest you to install all pending Windows updates in your PC and also update Display drivers. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: I would suggest you to check and install any latest Windows Updates available.

    • Go to Start and then Settings.
    • Click on Update and Recovery.
    • Check for updates under
      Windows Updates.
    • Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

Step 2: Please refer to the following Wiki article created by
Andre Da Costa on How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10.

  3. External Monitors and Ethernet connection--Windows 10

Any ideas on next steps? I'm in finger pointing "*ell...". My 1 year old Dell XPS12 ultrabook won't work with external monitors through a port replicator on Windows 10. It works intermittently and it's too late to roll back to windows 8.1. I've tried
3 different port replicators and none work. Support from Microsoft got both the internet and monitors to work on Monday but after turning off the computer overnight and then reconnecting Tuesday morning the external monitors and the ethernet connection don't
work again. Microsoft wasn't helpful on Tuesday or Wednesay and said it's not their problem, it's a graphics card issue, but that doesn't explain the ethernet connection. Dell can't fix it. Microsoft says it's a graphics card issue, not theirs, and DisplayLink
drivers don't help. But it's not just an external monitor or graphics card issue.

Any suggestions on how or where to escalate this issue would be much appreciated. Otherwise I assume I have to buy a new computer, and that doesn't make me happy.

    External monitor display settings

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are facing issues with the display scaling on your external displays. We will certainly look into this for you.

As you are using Vizio TV, you may have to try using custom resolution settings if the in-built settings do not provide the required settings.

For better clarity, please let us know:

    • What is the version of Windows 10 that is currently installed on your computer? You can click on Search and type
      winver.
    • Are you aware of any recent changes to the system, such as updates, after which you are facing this issue?
    • What is the make and model of your computer?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to check the steps mentioned in the Workaround section in

Windows scaling issues for high-DPI devices

I would also suggest you to check the Display drivers. Please refer

Let us know how it goes.
