Windows 10 Creator removes Ccleaner - and keeps removing it!

    Hi,

With the latest Win major update (to build 1709), several programs have been peremptorily removed - without warning the user. This "phenomenon" has been documented and commented on all over the Internet.

Apart from the uncouth manner in which such removals happen (sometimes uselessly and for no reason whatsoever, like the harmless classic Solitaire) and of course the irritating annoyance, one can easily correct things by reinstalling the discarded programs, either by a new clean install or by retrieving them in the folder where MS has stacked them.

With one exception: the always useful Ccleaner.

Reinstalling it offers no problem, and once this is done, one can do whatever one wants as before with it. But from the moment one exits Windows and shuts the computer, restarts or boots up the machine, lo and behold! Ccleaner has disappeared again.

This goes accompanied by a slow reboot (apparently where Windows cleans up the registry and discard once more the program.

This is an unheard of practice. Questions to Microsoft about why they do this results in an automatic reply saying one doesn't need a program like Ccleaner with the new Windows update. Which is patently untrue, because whatever cleanup procedures Windows executes (unasked for) behind our backs, it certainly does not clean the registry, which slowly gets clogged up, or does not discard junk files properly.

So, what can we do about this? Simply: how can we find a way to reinstall Ccleaner and keep it on the machine as before? Whatever the reasons for Microsoft's behaviour, I don't like to be treated like a child by a software company.

Naturally, if Piriform now comes up with a Ccleaner build that can resist the MS shenanigans, we will be out of these woods. But for the moment, this is not the case.

There are more Windows annoyances like not allowing pdf and graphic files to stick to the programs they are meant for, but who are systematically "glued" to either unwieldy Edge or so-called Paint 3D. But that's again another question no-one seems able to resolve.

So, let's keep first to that Ccleaner problem and see if someone has come up with a solution meanwhile - while waiting for Piriform to come up with something.

    Best

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Build 11082 Removed CCleaner

I updated to windows 10 Creator, version 1703, and it REMOVED my ccleaner program saying it's not compitable with this update.

It removed it without asking my permission. Does anyone have windows 10, version 1703 and are you able to run ccleaner without any problems??

  3. CCleaner Removed the Driver

To answer your question on System File Checker found in this
    thread
    ,

Troubleshooting Component Store / System Files Corruption

You might also try going back to Anne Ros February 8th suggestion to delete the file. Before deleting the file, try changing permissions on the file.

    • Once you choose the file that you want to give permission, right click on it.
    • Click on properties and go to security tab, check whether any permission have been set.
    • After you have viewed the permissions that are already set, you can now click on the Advanced Button that is right below the "Permissions for Authenticated Users"
    • Once you have clicked Advanced, a box like this should appear, the "Permission Entries" box, which shows all the permissions that are set for the users. Now, after you have spotted the user whose permissions you wish to change, click "Change Permissions.
    • Click on the user you would like to edit, and then click the option that says "Change Permissions" which is right below the box.
    • Once that is clicked, you are going to get the same box pop up, but this time, you can actually edit the options. You do that by clicking the "Administrators" user again, and this time, you are going to click the "Edit" option.

I suggest you continue to reply to this thread as to avoid confusion.

Mm, fortunately never been my experience through several upgrades...

As for pdf problems, those seem to be primarily related to Adobe users. I don't use Adobe, so don't find Edge usurping the association.

Well, it is my continuing experience. Couldn't make this up, could I. Moreover, if you consult the Internet, you'll see I am not the only one having to deal with this.

I don't have Ccleaner monitoring on... I noted some suggestion that might trigger removal on the internet. Another aspect is whether Ccleaner is up to date. There's reference (long time back) to out of date versions being removed.

Do you keep yours up to date?

I've not noted any posts on this forum mentioning it- but I don't read all posts either.

What version of CCleaner do you have? How old is it?

I have only once seen a manual upgrade remove CCleaner, and when it did so it told me it was going to and gave the reason - it was an older version of CCleaner that was not compatible with the latest build.

I still use a (slightly newer) version of CCleaner. When I upgraded to 1709 Windows was happy to leave it in place.

Windows 10 Creator removes Ccleaner - and keeps removing it!

CCleaner was removed on mine on upgrading to Windows 10. It has stayed removed because I was having doubts about recent versions before that happened anyway. It has never been installed again.
MS is right to uninstall it in my view. It is unnecessary trivia.

If CCleaner interferes with MS checks on the Registry on Startup then removed, tough. It is CCleaner that should be cleaning up their application.
There is no 'clogging up' of the Registry, you don't understand even basically how it works and it's purpose.

I have no problem at all with PDFs defaulted to my chosen application, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Same applies to various other file types defaulted to applications other than MS recommended ones.

Solitaire - there are about 20-30 versions in MS Store....

Solution to non problems, why get stressed, just move on.

  9. Nicely put, Helmut.

I never really understood the many, various "cleaner" programs.

Just exactly what is it that needs to be "cleaned"? Is something "dirty"? (No.)

What terrible things happen to the hundreds of millions of Windows users who don't "clean" things? (Nothing.)

So why fuss over it all? (No reason at all.)

I only really use CCleaner to selectively remove browser cookies across all browser at once, whitelisting logon cookies (like TenForums).

Selective deletion of cookies is possible in some browsers, but impossible to do in Edge.

  12. According to the title, Ccleaner seems.corrupt. You should try to remove it with Revo Uninstaller Pro.

    1.
Revo>Forced Uninstall>Program"s exact name>Type ccleaner>Advanced>Next>Decline any uninstall process from Piriform or Ccleaner>Let Revo do the work>Sellect all>Delete Twice. Shut down.

    2.
Search for leftover after in Regedit. For the Pro version of Ccleaner, the keys below were still there.

You should delete only this AND MAKE SURE you are not deleting a folder or adding more problems. This is a hot place to be.

    Regedit>Edit>Permission>ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES>Ful Control>Apply/OK>Edit>Find>Type ccleaner>Next>Delete>F3>Read carefully>Delete...

NOTE: In order to be near OP issue, Ccleaner was damaged in the registry before proceeding = not shown in Revo.

The registry does not get clogged up. That idea comes from registry cleaner ads and there is no basis for it in reality. The registry is a database. Internally there is absolutely zero difference between a critically important registry entry and one that is unused. The differences is in how is is used and that is external to the registry. Applications use the registry in a wide variety of ways. There are no firm standards for this, only conventions, and they are frequently ignored. The detection of unused or invalid registry entries is not 100% reliable so a registry cleaner must make frequent guesses. Sometimes they guess wrong, with unpredictable but generally unpleasant results.

At one time Microsoft had a registry cleaner available for download. It was intended primarily for the use of developers who would presumably be aware of it's limitations. It was later removed from downloads but it is still available from third party sites. The reason - it caused problems with some popular Microsoft applications.

Mark Russinovich, a well known and highly respected Windows expert, has been very critical of registry cleaners. It appears to me that individuals who know the registry best are generally the least likely to use them. He stated that the only way one could be reliable if it had a huge database of valid system and application registry entries. Such a thing would take an enormous effort to create, be incomplete, and be perpetually out of date. No such thing exists.
