Also IF your Windows 10 is the PRO version, than you CAN defer any Major Updates, but still receive your security updates
If you have the Home version, than this choice is not available

Regardless of all the fluff, Windows is NOT the issue, especially the Creator's update. If it were we'd ALL be experiencing the same issues since all of us have USB ports on our motherboards.

People can say what they want but facts speak for themselves.

Your issue is very likely a driver issue. Have you installed the latest chipset drivers for your board? And what BIOS are you now running.

    Good luck.

I am running now Bios Version F5, but i tried all of them up to F22 Beta. From F20 and up i have all kind of instability, including BSOD, non of them solve the issue with the USB 3.1 Port unspecified, i have tried the latest official and unofficial drivers non of them solve the problem either.
Ok now i installed windows from scratch Version 1607 Build 14393.1066 and everything is working 100% perfect, i know is a driver issue but it only happens with the latest version of windows, so i assume is a compatibility issue, by Gigabyte side or Windows i dont know.
I setted to defer any Major Updates and i have all the security update and hot fixes updated, and the USB 3.0 working properly.
Am i happy with this solution? not 100% because i paid for a software that i would like to use as intended, but it is a solution at least for now

Windows 10 Creators Update bug: USB 3.1 Port shown as Unspecified

After re-reading your original post above, I'm not seeing where you have or ever had an issue. You have an unpacified device in printers and drivers, but this is common and many of us have those. This is mine....

No issues with either my USB AIO Corsair Cooler, nor my USB ports.

If you actually had a USB issue, it would have shown up in Device Manager with a yellow triangle as shown in this example here....

Windows 10 Creators Update bug: USB 3.1 Port shown as Unspecified [IMG]

As long as there are no exclamation marks (!), question marks (?) or yellow triangles in Device Manager, all is good.

Additionally, you can check what the unspecified item is, and if it is properly working by right clicking the item, choosing Properties, click the Hardware tab, and click Properties. If there's an issue you'll see it. If not, it'll look like this...

Bottom line is you've shown no real issue, and certainly not one where Creator broke something.

BTW you can see this thread here. Same thing, no issue.

    Hope this helps *Smile

    Hi,

same problem here with a ga-z170x-gaming 7 motherboard and creators update.

In my case the problem is that appears to unplug and not existing usb-hub.

I made contact with gigabyte support and Microsoft boards, both of them blame the the other part.

Greetings and hope this get fixed soon.

  10. Sygnus21 - Thanks for your last post. I really was confused after reading the OP's first post. Yes the Creators update was the first release of W10 to show that "USB Root Hub" in devices and under "Safely Remove". I have a "GA-Z170X-UD5" MB and it has the USB 3.1 support. If I plug in a USB 3.0 External drive into the 3.1 port, it indeed runs at USB 3.0 speed. I do believe MS changed something in the Creators update on how they handle USB 3.1. IDK, I'm not an expert.

My problem is finding a compatible USB 3.1 Enclosure. There are several out there, but most will not handle the speed when running on my I7 system. The 2 that I have work great on a USB 3.0 port, but when plugged into the 3.1 port, fail to handle the full speed of USB 3.1 and normally end up hanging the application that was using that device. I also have several USB 3.0 external enclosure's that are OK when being used as 3.0 devices and several that do not (they end up hanging the application as in USB 3.1). I have a mid range AMD laptop that has USB 3.0 support, and all of the USB 3.0 devices run OK there. I have called and discussed these issues with 2 different manufactures, they both replaced these units, but still no winning. I noticed and pointed out to the Manufactures, there are several chipsets available that they use in their units. some work some do not. The only good news is that the ones that fail on my I7 system, also have Esata capability. Its almost as fast as USB 3.0.

    My reply above in red.

In the end, I truly don't believe the Creator update is responsible for any USB3.1 issues since I stated earlier, these purported issues predate the Creator update.

Anyway since moving to a new Z270X Gigabyte motherboard (GA-Z270X Gaming 8), I've had no issues, especially USB issues. Currently running the latest version of Windows 10 Pro x64, Creator. You can see my board and thoughts here - 2017 Hardware Thread - Page 120 - Windows 10 Forums. System specs listed in "My Computer".

Yes - but, prior to the Creators edition, "Safely Remove" never had "USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)" as a removable device, but its not really removable.

I didn't mean to imply that there are issues with USB 3.1 in 1703. I agree other than what I mentioned above, it works.

You might be right but it's not hindering anything. I use removable drives all the time including a USB 3.0 Passport external drive, a Western Digital USB 3.0 My Book external drive, and a USB 3.0 SandDisk Thumb drive. No USB or eject issues there. Just click on the device you want to eject and done. No fuss, no muss. That said, I normally just unplug my external drives without issue.

Regardless I don't see the root hub as an issue. That's me.

    Peace *Cool
