Windows 10 Creators Update rollout: First phase update

    Hi Shawn,

I'm new at following win10's versions, and I have 14393.1066 installed, do I have to wait until I get 14393.1083 installed before the creators update is offered to me?

Thank you for the link Shawn but I will give it a few more days before I try forcing anything. It looks like 14393.1066 is the limit for 1607 so its a waiting game for me, meanwhile I'll be reading up on versions and branches.

1607 will continue to receive cumulative updates for a long time to come, as will 1511. Only the original 10240 release has reached end of support.

So; What determines when you receive 1703?

Microsoft do - based on their telemetry and feedback. Newer and tested machines to get it first, machines with known problems will be left until a fix and/or new drivers are available, older machine in a later phase. It's all in the blog Brink quoted, and in this one...

Windows 10 Creators Update rollout: First phase update

    Hi there

Apart from a small glitch with Windows Defender it installs on a few machines very easily - probably easiest update done (installed manually with the update tool).

Note though the following (for CU update - 1703)

    1) If you do a CLEAN install from the ISO or a bootable USB made from the ISO it will default to HOME so if you want pro etc see step 3).

    2) It may request activation - even though you previously had a digital licence - simply enter a W7 (or whatever) key by choosing change product number and enter the number.

    3) To get the version option (HOME/PRO/EDUCATION etc) at install time (note this is for CU update 1703 CLEAN install ) extract the ISO with a tool like 7-zip and add a file to the sources folder and name it ei.cfg with the following contents :

    [Channel]
    _Default
    [VL]
    0

(the 0 must be added in the last line --not a typo).

If you have made a bootable USB from the ISO you can add the file directly to the sources folder with file explorer.

Note - same restriction though you can only update HOME-->HOME, PRO/Ultimate to PRO etc.

    Cheers

    Hi there

Open the USB and you should see the directory as shown.

Now open the sources folder and copy file ei.cfg (the one you should create with notepad or similar) to the sources folder.

Now when you install Windows you will see the version options again.
