  1. Windows 10 does not recognise external usb dvd drive. NEW METHOD REQUIRED fornfix

So, after a recent update, my father-in-laws laptop has stopped recognising his external dvd drive. It shows up in device drivers as an initio device, and in portable drives, it's listed as e:\ but it doesn't show up as a drive in file manager windows. This happened previously, and I used a fix listed here Windows Not Recognising Drive Specifically, METHOD 5 " This problem may be caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries, follow these steps: Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Rundialog box.Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or select AllowIn the navigation pane, locate and then select the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane, select UpperFilters. Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.On the Edit menu, select Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, select Yes.In the right pane, select LowerFilters. Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to the next method. On the Edit menu, select Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, select Yes.Exit Registry Editor.Restart the computer. Note: To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. To verify that you are signed in as an administrator, bring up the Control Panel, select User Accounts, and then choose Manage User Accounts. Important: Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur. After trying this method, some apps, such as CD or DVD recording software, might not work correctly. If so, try uninstalling and reinstalling the affected app. Check with the creator of the app to see if there is an updated version. If your problem is not solved, try the next method." Then: METHOD 6 "To create the registry subkey, follow these steps: Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Runbox.Type regedit in the Run box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or select Allow. In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi Right-click atapi, point to New, then select Key.Type Controller0, and then press Enter.Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then select DWORD(32-bit) Value .Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter.Right-click EnumDevice1, select Modify....Type 1 in the Value data box, and then select OK.Exit Registry Editor.Restart the computer. Notes To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. To verify that you are signed in as an administrator, bring up the Control Panel, select User Accounts, and then choose Manage User Accounts. This method should be used on Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1, or Windows 10 version 1507. The issues fixed by this method shouldn’t occur in Windows 10 1511 or later." My problem is, that now he has updated windows to most recent version, this fix no longer seems to work, and if you notice at the bottom of the support methods provides, it specifically states that these methods should NOT BE NECESSARY in the latest updates. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.

    External hard drive not recognised

    Hi twynog,

The issue that you're experiencing with the external hard drive might be due to some missing Windows hardware or software updates. To help you in resolving this, you may follow the steps below:

Method 1: Uninstall and then reconnect the external hard drive - this method resolve issues where the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt.

    • Select Start, type Device Manager in the Search box.
    • Select Device Manager from the returned list.
    • Select Disk Drives from the list of hardware.
    • Press and hold (or right-click) the USB external hard drive with the issue, and select Uninstall.
    • After the hard drive is uninstalled, unplug the USB cable.
    • Wait for 1 minute and then reconnect the USB cable. The driver should automatically load.
    • Check for the USB drive in Windows Explorer.

If method 1 doesn't work the way it should, you may proceed to other steps provided in this
    article.

Do get back to us if you need further assistance.

If you think this was useful, you may "mark it as an answer" to help those who are facing the same issue.
