Windows 10: Error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 When Upgrading to Creator Updat

The error message simply said it failed at SAFE_OS while doing the BOOT operation. I have tried using Windows Update Assistant, Media Creation Tools and the Creator Update ISO file for this update for ~10 times, it always got stuck on the booting screen with no-moving splash Windows icon and I have to hard reboot to restart the computer.

The setuperr.log file has the following content, which seems to be a driver error which I don't understand:

My computer is Lenovo Thinkpad P50 mobile workstation. It also has Ubuntu and a recovery software installed alongside Windows 10. Lenovo Companion told me all drivers were update-to-date. Tried many approached searched online, including unplugging USBs and external devices, using UEFI/legacy booting options, disable WIFI, no success. Any idea on how to fix this?

    Thanks!

    :)

Windows 10: Error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 When Upgrading to Creator Updat

a recovery program? Something like Rollback RX maybe?

If so, I think you'd need to uninstall that before upgrading.

Plus you are upgrading a dual boot configuration, which might give rise to further problems.

The recovery program is called Macrium Reflect. I need both the recovery/backup program and the Ubuntu OS to make sure I can still boot up the computer if Windows 10 fails, plus I need Ubuntu for programming stuff.

Any idea on the lack of driver error?

Excellent that you're using disk imaging.

I would suggest making sure you have Macrium's bootable disk to hand- people have been known to end up with unbootable PCs.

I can only suggest making the configuration as simple as possible for the upgrade. Otherwise wait for comment from people who have
    a. dual boot configured
    b. Macrium configured at boot

I'm afraid I know no more about your driver error.. hopefully someone will be able to advise. I'm holding back on this upgrade for a couple of reasons.

There are some possibly useful results if you search for
Failed to set WU internal configuration property for targeted scans
    or
failed at SAFE_OS while doing the BOOT operation

I cannot fix this either. I'm on amd system. I have tried 3 flash drives.. and can't even get it to try and load the install screen. I even removed the hard drive just to see and i get almost the same error when it boots from flash drive. System pte misuse error. Disconnected wifi card etc.. so it cannot be a driver issue since I can't even get the install program to load. I have tried setting up flash drive with uefi support and without and even tried a brand new hard drive for the hell of it. I can try the update through fresh windows 10 install and it gives same error '0xc1900101 etc.

@dalchina, I have tried all of the tricks mentioned in your suggested links except for a few hardware swaps. No luck.

Just tried making an USB installer, but it only allowed me to freshly install Windows 10 by deleting all my previous settings. Disabling the internet will generate the same error... No clue what's the missing driver for me.

The shmig.dll is related to a Microsoft migration software. Attached is my recent error log. Still no clue how to fix them.

Ok, I fixed it. Actually, not perfect and by accident. What I did is I accidentally deleted my Linux (Ubuntu)'s /boot partition in windows as Windows told me that partition was not formatted (it's not true!), and couldn't boot into either ubuntu or Windows 10. So, I pressed F12 while booting up, and selected the SSD where both Windows and Ubuntu were installed and managed to boot into Windows 10 where the last trial of updating to Creator Updated was performed. Surprisingly, it started to updating the files as if the Creator Update was normally installing! After 30 mins, Windows got updated successfully--although Chrome crashed after that alongside with a few other bugs.

Anyway, I cannot use the normal booting process so far, and I think the problem is the Grub loader installed by Ubuntu might have made the Creator Update installation problematic before. If you encounter this error message, you might want to try using the UEFI boot loader to boot into Windows after the update was copied to C and well configured. YMMV.

Now, I need to fix my Ubuntu OS! OMG, why Windows told me the Linux partition was not formatted? *cry

It will be interesting to see how other people with dual boot fare.

    I wondered about that (#2).

I admit I had trepidations about how it would work but since I had images of both systems I figured I'd throw caution to the wind and give it a try. It went flawlessly, not a single hiccup which I admit surprised me.

After upgrading my desktop test rig to 1703, I had to use Macrium Reflect's boot repair utility from its Rescue Disk to restore my dual boot setup. After that I used EasyBCD to move boot entries around and redefine the text that shows up in the boot selection menu. I can explain this in detail, step-by-step, if anybody wants to know more details (it's pretty easy, though).
