    I have a Windows 10 installation that I kept when I upgraded my motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc. basically a new setup and kept my old installation due to the inconvenience of reinstalling many programs and plugins I use for work.Recently, my Windows Explorer has been frequently unresponsive, especially when using Windows Key + Shift + S for taking screenshots.When it becomes unresponsive, I'll restart into Safe Mode and run "sfc /scannow", which will find errors and repair them.I also run "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" which will sometimes find and repair errors as well.This never

    Yea, but if something corrupts it won't detect anything. I would use the DISM command to check the health and then restore it. I usually just skip the health check and just do a Health restore. Then after the Health restore then I do the sfc /scannow command.

    you can try the built in windows repair. I forget if its refresh or reset.

    alternatively you can try

    Admin Powershell

    SFC /scannow

    then

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    Problem is not with windows update. It is with defender malware update.
    Please do
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    After above steps, reboot laptop and do sfc /scannow.
