Windows 10: Windows 10 Explorer Sorting Folders

Hey just wondering does anyone know of any software or methods so I can sort folders in a particular order.





I want these folders to be sorted in a particular way.

Windows explorer can't remember sorting-by-author folder preference

I have a very specific problem. I want windows explorer to remember to sort files by author in my music folders. Every time I open the folder, windows explorer sort files alphabetically, even if I had previously set the folder to sort files by author (On
other computers, sorting files by author once makes the explorer remember it for that folder) . The weird thing is that everything in the folder preferences beside that is correctly saved, and windows explorer do remember the columns I set, the width of the
columns, and even any other sorting order I would set (sorting by file size, by album, by title, by date, etc ...) and correctly displays it when i open the folder again. For some reason, this problem only affects the author tab of my folders. I already searched
the web for a solution, but I can't find anyone with the exact same problem, in most cases the explorer is unable to remember any folder preference (and it resets everything including the width of the columns etc ... , which is not my case) . Anyway I tried
several of their solutions, including the "apply to folders" button in the folder's options, and editing register keys, but nothing worked.

I have no idea where this problem could come from, the PC I use is brand new, I bought it 1 week ago with windows 8, and updated it to windows 10 as soon as i could. I didn't have that problem on my previous PC which was on windows 7.

you can sort by date modified or size or type and name just by clicking on the text above as listed

 

And if that isn't enough, you can right click on any column title and add them. Clicking on ...more will give you even more possible tags that you can show and sort with.

 

I understand both of the methods you two are listing but what if I want my folders in a very particular order, is it possible to achieve that?

 

What would that particular order be? Because, tags listed above offer some choice.

Edit: beside sorting column (tag) you can also group files and folders.

 

I want to be able to have these in an order liek this for example

[FOLDER] Steam Games
[FOLDER] Blizzard Games
[FOLDER] Origin Games
[FOLDER] Program Files
[FOLDER] Program Files (x86)
etc etc

I want them in an order where I can quickly distinguish windows files from game directories, etc through a particular order.

 

Aha, so you want them to be listed by your choice and the order to stay put?

Is this something that can be accomplished using tags?

 

maybe someone knows, how to add user tags. Not my territory. But you could add numbers to your folders, so they will be at start and sorted as you choose. Leave windows folders alone and they will be at bottom.

You could create custom folder locations in the navigation pane with 'WinAero Tweaker'

 

File Explorer in Windows 8 and newer, Windows Explorer in Windows 7 back to Windows 95, File Manager in Windows 3.xx and earlier.

I usually do the Custom install of programs if not wanting them in their default location. For Windows 64-bit the defaults are C:\Program Files for 64-bit programs and C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit programs. For Windows 32-bit the default is C:\Program Files. The big issue is the difficulty in moving Folders after programs have been installed due to Registry entries and Windows not knowing where the necessary files are located. If not wanting alphabetical listing I will put the tilde ~ symbol before the Folder name.

 

Looks like not possible without third party software.
It is kinda possible with Quick access area. You can pin your folder that you access often to Quick access (this is what it's meant for) and there you can sort them in very peculiar way *Smile
