Windows 10: windows 10 fail install 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

Today I tried to upgrade from win 8.1 to win10 on a week old Acer E17 laptop, I had loaded office 16, elements13 and AVG prior to deciding to do the upgrade.

However on upgrading I get the error above, with the comment install fail during second_boot.

Googling the issue, it would imply that there is a driver issue, however since there are no logs etc, and no way of finding where the issue is, we have had to revert to 8.1. The comment was that there could be a USB issue (can't be in this case as no usb devices attached), and Nvidia as another suspect, (not using Nvidia); so there is another issue out there. Any ideas?

I looked at the Acer drivers. I noticed that Acer have a very different set of drivers for win10 compared to win8.1 for my laptop - does this imply that the laptop isn't really upgradeable to win10 without a clean install , ie no upgrade?

Failure Message reads

We couldn't install Windows 10

This installation failed in the second_boot phase with an error during boot operation

Any thoughts ?

 

Upgrade from windows 7 to 10 failed

I have tried to upgrade to windows 10 but I get the following error message

The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation

0xC1900101-0x40017

 

I think I may have answered my own question. I will document here in case it assists others.

I don't know whether it was a combination of what I did, or a specific action..............

1. I removed AVG as often it can be a cause of problems.
2. I updated the Intel graphics driver, as I read elsewhere that the graphics software can be a cause of this problem.
3. I also updated the Intel chipset driver as I noticed there had been a very recent update, unlike the other drivers.
4. On the subsequent upgrade (retaining apps/personal folders), I also selected "updates" which I did not in the first attempt that failed with the above error.
5, I also made sure all Win8.1 updates were installed, there were some 100+ waiting!!

 

Im running on a ProBook 6460B and trying to update - no cigar yet, same error. just preparing installation third time now (there came some windows updates 4-5 forehand) - let us see how it goes now.

next time i try, im gonna remove the bios password fully and see if it makes any difference
