    Windows 10 Failed after Chkdsk, restore files from new install?


    Hi,

    Trying to run some troubleshooting tests to get a backup software working again, running an offline chkdsk was done. I told it to do it, said it was busy, and scheduled for restart.

    chkdsk ran, I left the computer alone, when I came back, it was off.

    Won't boot into original Windows 10 install. It bluescreens to "We ran into a problem..." with a stop code "bad system config info"
    It restarts, tries to repair, diagnose, then goes to recovery environment.

    Startup repair fails.
    There are no system restore options (why would these be default off?!)

    sfc finds no errors
    dsim won't run with various errors (50, 1009, and more)

    There were no backups in RegBack to use and restore.

    Eventually purchased a new USB, made a installation media. Couldn't run them from there, either. Installed a new WIndows install into a new partition.

    What's the easiest way to restore my files, apps, settings, etc from my original C:\ drive?

    Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

    I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
