Windows 10 fails to update to version 1511 (10586), always gets stuck

I have been trying for a full week now, to no avail. Whenever I apply the update, it goes to the "Restarting" screen...and gets stuck there indefinitely. Even after a few hours, it's still on that screen. So ultimately I have to force shutdown my PC (after which I can use it as per normal). I also do not believe I have any malware on my PC (have scanned multiple times with Kaspersky just to be sure).

I had updated to Windows 8 > 8.1 > 10 on this same PC before and never faced a single issue. I also never mess around much with default system settings.

Meanwhile, for my laptop, the update went extremely smoothly.

So can someone please help me out here?

    Thanks!

    :)

    • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
    • Restart a few times then try again.
    • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
    • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
    • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
    • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
    • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
    • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
    • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
    • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

I tried multiple times to install the 1511 update through Windows Update. Then I remembered that when I updated to Win 10 in the first place, it wouldn't work through Windows update or by making an ISO using the Media Creation Tool, because I had SQL Server installed.

I use some software called MyMovies (My Movies - Home) that installs a runtime version of SQL Server. So I remembered that I had to Disable all the SQL Server services, then reboot the system. Then go into Windows Update. It should go through 'Preparing for Installation' then 'Downloading' etc.

When it says a restart has been scheduled then choose Restart Now. The upgrade will install and then you can re-enable SQL Server services afterwards. This way you can actually upgrade and you don't need to mess about with ISOs.

I actually managed to do all this remotely using Teamviewer, and it even showed me the Upgrading screen after about 75%

    Hope this helps.

Assuming that you had being trying to install using Windows Update.
If that is correct, please use the link below............

    Media Creation Tool ( MCT ) :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

*** Please make sure you follow the instructions to the letter. Please don't deviate ***

Download the Tool and run it.
Then select Create installation media for another PC
That will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer.
When download is completed, RIGHT click at the ISO > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
That will begin installing Windows 10.
You have the choice of keeping settings, files and apps, or keeping nothing.
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.

The installation creates a temporary Windows directory which contains the file setuperr.log. Is there an error message towards the end of this file which suggests what the problem may be?
