Windows 10 Fall Creators (1709) Update Issues

I am having issues updating from 1703 to 1709, and I could use some help.

I used the native Windows Update tool to download 1709. I restarted my computer when prompted to begin the installation. I got about a quarter of the way through the installation when I got a blue screen. The computer then reverted back to 1703 automatically.

I used the Windows 10 upgrade assistant tool, but that resulted in the same blue screen. (Also, I noticed that the tool mentioned that my computer was running a much older version of Windows 10 than is actually installed.)

I used the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which seems to have cleared most of the files in the "SoftwareDistribution" folder. After using the Update Troubleshooter, I tried using the upgrade assistant tool again, but it still failed. Now, when I used the native update tool, it says that my system is up to date. But that is impossible because I still haven't been able to download and install 1709.

Any suggestions? I have an HP Spectre x360.

    :)

  2. Windows10Upgrade on latest edition?

That folder is where the latest version called 'Fall Creators Update' install files might be stored.

  3. Computer Issue or....

Which version of Windows 10 is installed?

Is it the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709?

I'm not surprised you are having trouble with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

There seems to be some early adopter issues at this time with Windows 10 1709, if you can, I recommend you downgrade to your previous version until the Fall Creators Update matures with future cumulative updates.

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > under Go back to my previous version of Windows 10, click Get started.

Hi, please post a screenshot of your partitions using Minitool partition wizard.
    Please post your windows build:
    Windows key + R, winver
Also a screenshot of your Update History.

What is your disk type? (HDD, SSD etc?)

Please make sure you have around 20Gb free on your C: drive, and 500Mb of unallocated space on your system drive.

    1. First check your disk:
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and make sure all disks are reported as good.
If not, do not continue, and post back .

    2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | Reviews, news, tips, and tricks | dotTechdotTech
    or
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

    3. Now check your system files. From an admin command prompt
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and post the result.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

    What went wrong?
Then see this where many error numbers and messages are listed:

Here is some more context: When I use the Windows Upgrade Tool, it gets to about 30 percent, restarts, then I get a BSOD saying "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED." I'm currently running Version 1703 (Build 15063.674) and I have a a SSD with plenty of space. The latest update I installed was "Security update for Adobe Flash Player: October 17, 2017" (KB4049179). I ran CHKDSK and got a message saying that "Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems."

  6. I'm having same BSOD error message when trying to upgrade to Fall Creators update. BSOD has nothing to do with my computer hardware or software i have used same version of Windows 10 Creators Update to perform in-place upgrade it was successful. Looks like there is something wrong with latest version of the Fall Creators update.

Seems it may still be something to do with your hardware/software.

The same SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED problem was reported with 1703 as well. This thread looked into one example, diagnosing an Ethernet camera driver as the cause. Apparently this is where to look for clues....

(I wouldn't know, as the upgrade worked perfectly for me so I don't have that folder)

I did check the log files there was no indication what cause the BSOD i have updated all my drivers funny think is that i have installed the Fall Creators update at my VM twice without problem.

Well it may help @burg716 to look for the cause of their problem.
Sounds like they should have that folder.

  10. There is no BSOD memory dump file been created i have not come cross setupmem.dmp file. I will be clean installing Fall Creators update to see if something wrong with my computer.

I don’t see a memory dump file, but I see setuperr.log in Panther, and it seems the update got hung up on a network driver. Although, I am not an expert in analyzing that log file.

Anyway, I removed the network driver and I am trying the update again. I’ll let you know if that works.

Didn’t work. Still got the same error. What should I be looking for in the setuperr.log?

For the failed upgrade was there an error code or error message?

Please change the default language (back and forth) to get English as the default language.
Language - Add, Remove, and Change in Windows 10 General Tips Tutorials

Once the default language is English:

Open administrative powershell and copy and paste: Get-WindowsUpdateLog
It may take 5 - 10 minutes to process and then place txt on the desktop.
Post a one drive or drop box share link into the thread.
Share OneDrive files and folders - Office Support

    Then view the Panther logs.
Submit them by one drive or drop box share links.
    There should always be:
    supererr
    superact
