Windows 10 Fall Creators Update coming October 17th 2017

That's old information and contains a big loophole:
My reading of this phrase is, if the hardware supplier doesn't keep supplying Microsoft with new drivers every time they create a new Win10 OS version, it's no longer within the "supported lifetime of the device", so your machine could goes out of support well before 2025.

The Clover Trail thing is an example of this - Intel aren't supplying MS with new drivers which work with Creators Update (which has presumably changed something about how it interacts with the processor) and these processors won't work with CU or presumably any later versions.

MS have said they will support these Clover Trail devices until 2023 (which you will note is not the 2025 mentioned in that old computerworld article) as an exception. But I imagine they won't do this for every piece of hardware where the OS changes break the drivers.

Note the Windows 10 footnote against that 2025 date on the Lifecycle page which includes this:
So you could be out of luck of they don't fix it.

I'm still wondering if microsoft will make the media tool and upgrader available this week (on tuesday) to the general windows 10 users so they can get a week jump on it (as they did with the last upgrade)...If anyone sees it become available, please report here on it...I'd love to get an early start and do my upgrade this week...
    Thanks! *Smile

  3. Well my PC does not seem to support the latest update so they have a flaw in their Life cycle or maybe not-could be intentional.

This is one of the reasons I keep a Linux(usually Ubuntu) virtual machine, to stay up to date on and changes, and to stay in practice.

Linux is good about keep kernel drivers and microcode upto date, even if someone has to create them themselves and open source them.

They even have Cyrix drivers *Eek

I know , at one time I had maybe 6 or more Distros installed but the two I mentioned are my favorite. As for Windows 10, to me it is a tool, nothing more.

I am not sure if My Corsair Keyboard, mouse and Headset will work in Linux.

The point is easy access from all of your devices. I use OneDrive. Its on my cell phone (android). On my phone, my camera backs up all of my pictures automatically to OneDeive. So, if i lose my phone, i don't lose any of my pictures. If i want to share pictures from an event, i can share via OneDrive and provide those who want to see these pictures a link.

Cloud storage also gives you an offsite backup you don't have to think about . This is great for those who do not backup regularly. It also protects those who do backup, by keeping the backups offsite. My sister's house burned down. Want to know what happened to their backups stored in her house?

Files stored in cloud, are also synced to your hard drive. So, if MS loses your files in the cloud, you have a copy locally.

Just protect and encrypt private things, and you should be safe.

Do you store your external device offsite? Floods, thefts and fire can easily render your external stoarage useless.

  12. I do not live in a Flood Plain. But I do have a close of the external drive. If there were a flood here a backup of windows 10 would not be a high priority.*Wink

    Hi,

By locally I meant having Onedrive store the same copies on our machines. Sorry if I expressed myself badly.

Well, i am not 100% comfortable just having my files in the cloud. What if MS lost all of my files. Having a synced copy makes me feel more at ease. The chance of me losing my hard drive ay exactly the same time MS loses my files would be extremely unlikely.

    Hi,

Again, no, that's not what I meant. It's about Onedrive holding local copies of files you save to the cloud.
If you use Onedrive it should save the files to the cloud and placeholders locally.
The user should keep the original files to an external disk or whatever. That was what I meant.

Onedrive stores placheholders locally now which do not take up much disk space.

    Cheers, *Wink
