Windows 10 feature updates remove files from GAC (global assembly cache)

    Hi,

we have observed that feature updates purge some assemblies from GAC und thus corrupts installed applications.

    Interestingly enough the update even purges Microsoft's files like VSTA runtime C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.AddIn\2.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a\System.AddIn.dll ('System.AddIn, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a') .

    But also 3rd-party file

    C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Newtonsoft.Json\v4.0_10.0.0.0__30ad4fe6b2a6aeed\Newtonsoft.Json.dll

    is deleted.

My another observation is that all 3rd-party assemblies are deleted from GAC CLRv2 (C:\Windows\assembly) if an assembly with the same identity was found in GAC of CLRv4 (i.e. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly).

I've already reported that through Windows Insider Feedback Hub years ago.

Is there a possibility to prevent this behavior and avoid the need for reinstalling the applications (and MS VSTA)?

    Regards,

    Andrej

    :)

Unable to install app; needs MS.VS.Shell 2.0.0.0 or MS.VS.Text.Logic 10.0.0.0 in GAC

I wrote a little app using VS 2013 on my Win 10 PC and now I want to install it on my Laptop (Win10) and Tablet(Win10)

Unfortunately, both installations fail with a Global Assembly Cache error.

On the Laptop I get "The application requires that assembly Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell Version 2.0.0.0 be installed in the GAC first.

On the Tablet I get "The application requires that assembly Microsoft.VisualStudio.Text.Logic Version 10.0.0.0 be installed in the GAC first.

I am surprised the VS does not supply all the necessary files or downloads missing files automatically when installing on a new computer. At least that was my very limited experience with Win 8.1.

Despite extensive search I have not been able to find info on how to resolve these issues.

Any help is very much appreciated.

  3. Can't install Visual Studio 2015.

I removed the "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop" folder from C:\Windows\assembly\GAC and also the tmp folder.
The installation now is progressing. I will update the thread if it runs into any error or if that finishes installing successfully.

The issue was resolved after following the steps.
    Navigate to C:\Windows\assembly\GAC
    Delete folder Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop

    Navigate to C:\Windows\assembly
    delete folder tmp

    Thank you. *Smile

    "assembling windows features"

Thank you Yank M. No, I have not recently updated.

The first message is "Stage 1 of 13. Preparing to configure Windows". It then goes to "Stage 2 of 12. Assembling Windows features".
