Windows 10 File Explorer performing slowly/freezing up a lot

So, recently (last month or so) the Windows explorer is performing horribly on my PC.

Some of the issues I've seen:

    • Windows won't update when a file is created - I make a new folder/text file, it won't appear until I refresh the folder view by pressing F5
      • This is temporarily solved by going to Personalisation -> Themes -> Icon settings -> Restore defaults, though I haven't changed anything. It breaks again the next time I restart my PC.
    • Dragging/Dropping files from one explorer window to another will cause it to freeze, display "Not responding" and take about forty seconds to come back to normal - at which point I need to do the drag/drop action again.
    • Often the search box in the explorer window will stop responding and I have to restart the process to get it back to normal again

Overall, it makes using the computer sluggish and frustrating. I've tried the following so far with no luck at fixing it:

    • Checking for Windows updates - none are found
    • SFC /Scannow and chkdsks - all clean, no errors
    • Full shut downs/ restarts
    • Virus scans - all clean, no errors
    • Killing and restarting Explorer.exe - it fixes it for a bit, then it plays up again and I need to do this again. Like, every half an hour or so.

    Some hardware/software information:

    • Windows is installed on an SSD - nothing else on the PC seems slow
    • I am currently on Windows 10 home, Version 1909
    • 32GB Ram/I5 3.2ghz Processor, though I doubt this is relevant as it was fine until recently.

Has anyone else experienced this or know a solution? It's getting frustrating that I want to reinstall windows in it's entirety but I know that will likely be a foolish endeavour. I will greatly appreciate anyone's efforts or help to resolve this problem and help me get my computer back to it's fast, responsive self!

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

window file explorer freezes while black strip comes above the explorer window

    Hi Sunny,

Windows Explorer freezes may be due to third-party programs or virus infection. As an initial troubleshooting step, temporarily disable your antivirus programs. After that, replicate the issue if it will freeze. You can enable your antivirus program after
    we troubleshoot.

If the issue persists, you can try refreshing/restarting Windows Explorer by following these steps:

    • Open Task Manager by typing it in the Cortana search bar, then press Enter.
    • Look for Windows Explorer, then right-click it and select End task.
    • The taskbar will disappear at the bottom of your screen.
    • On the Task Manager, look for any installed application like your browser.
    • Right-click it and select the Open file location. A new window will appear.
    • Click the File tab and select Open Windows Powershell, then select Open Windows Powershell as administrator.
    • Type in explorer.exe and press Enter.

It should put the taskbar back at the bottom of your screen. Check if it will freeze again.

Keep us posted after performing the troubleshooting steps.
