WIndows 10 File Explorer Properties > Tools > Error Checking hangs up and does not run.

This issue has been on-going for the last few months on my Microsoft SurfaceBook Pro 2. I keep my version of Windows updated, The problem began after one of the Windows updates, but I am unsure of exactly which one.

I use external drives for storage. I periodically run Error Checking on various drives, even if I have not received an error. I sometimes move the drives for use on other devices, such as video player. Sometimes the devices do not recognize the drives even though they have no errors. Running Error Checking seems to clear that up. I've done this for many years with no issues.

When I run Error Checking, the status bar does not move for hours. If I chancel the error checking, the status stays a "Cancelling" for hours. I receive no errors; the actions just do not seem to process. I can run chkdsk /f from the command prompt with no problem. I have run sfc /scannow and it does not identify any issues. I typically have to restart file explorer from the task manager or restart the computer to clear the process.

One other item of note. After the same update, the "view" within File Explorer frequently changes for no apparent reason as I move the mouse curser across the screen. I always keep the view set to "Details" but it can randomly change to another view such as "List" as I move the mouse curser.

I did recover to the oldest restore point I had once the problem became annoying enough. This did not clear up the issue, but the restore point may have been created after the unknown, problematic update.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Windows 10 File explorer error

Thanks for update. Since the issue still occurs in a new user, perhaps there is a corrupted Windows component that's causing File Explorer to not work how it's supposed to, specifically, Windows Search. Windows Search is a service that provides content indexing,
property caching, and search results for files, e-mail, and other content. We suggest that you temporarily stop the Windows Search service and check if it helps.

    Here's how:

    • Open Run by pressing Win+R.
    • Type services.msc, and then click OK.
    • In the Services window, locate Windows Search.
    • Right-click on Windows Search, and then select Stop.
    • Run File Explorer.

In addition, we also suggest that you run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) and Deployment Image Servicing & Management (DISM.exe) tools to automatically find and fix any corrupted or missing system files. You may refer to this
Forum Article by ZigZag3143 (MS-MVP) for the steps on how to do so.

Kindly update us on the outcome.

Checking Win 10 OS with Scan

You might try the following steps adapted from
    https://answers.microsoft.com

Press Windows key + E on your keyboard to open File Explorer.

In the File Explorer window, click on This PC in the left navigation pane.

A list of drives is displayed on the right side of the window. Right-click on the drive you want to run Scandisk on and select Properties.

In the Properties window, click on the Tools tab.

Click the Check button in the Error Checking section.

The computer needs to restart to run Scandisk without any interruptions.
