Windows 10: Windows 10 File Explorer, Right-Click Freeze-up only happens with two+ windows open

I am working on a 2+ week-old new-build/clean-install Win-10 64-bit enterprise with all updates installed. Immediately after the install, and as far as I remember the only "extra" software I had installed was Chrome, as I was copying files from my old development machine I experienced frequent right-click freezes. Most annoying! Searched for answers; found references to disabling some extensions; did so for one or two; no change in behavior. It continued since then but I grumbled and lived with it.


Yesterday, I started noticing a pattern: If I confined my work to a single file browser window, I didn't have any problems. (Just finished recompiling all of our software for dot-net 4.7.2 and was moving components into various build folders.) My preference is to have the destination folder-set open in one window, and use a second window to grab the components to copy; but I could only select and copy from one window to another window one (or maybe two?) times; the next time I selected a set of files in the second window and tried to right-click, the window would freeze. So I "re-booted" file explorer and tried with a single window; and with only one window open I could switch between folders, select and copy, rinse and repeat forever. But as soon as I opened a second window and tried to right-click on a selected-group, it would freeze.


To Reproduce:

Open a single file-explorer window, open a folder with many files , select several - can right-click. Select a different set - can right click. Select a third set - can right click. Open a second explorer window. Without even changing to the second window, in the original window select a group of files - try to right-click and it freezes. If you select a group of files in the second window, the behavior is the same: as soon as you right-click, it freezes. The


If anyone can supply a fix, I'll be glad enough to try it. If a Microsoft staffer want's to see it, I can easily show it.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows Explorer

I have Windows 7. Every time I try to open up my external HD the Windows Explorer quits working. I researched a little at this forum and "Wile E" had said

It's AVI files causing the problem. It happens when explorer tries to preview them. You can shut off previewing, and it goes away.

Open a run box, and type this:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

It will prevent Explorer from trying to preview video files.

The post was 5 years old. Does anyone know what command I would give to to shut off previewing? Thankyou

Hi Sunny,

Windows Explorer freezes may be due to third-party programs or virus infection. As an initial troubleshooting step, temporarily disable your antivirus programs. After that, replicate the issue if it will freeze. You can enable your antivirus program after
we troubleshoot.

If the issue persists, you can try refreshing/restarting Windows Explorer by following these steps:

• Open Task Manager by typing it in the Cortana search bar, then press Enter.
• Look for Windows Explorer, then right-click it and select End task.
• The taskbar will disappear at the bottom of your screen.
• On the Task Manager, look for any installed application like your browser.
• Right-click it and select the Open file location. A new window will appear.
  
• Click the File tab and select Open Windows Powershell, then select Open Windows Powershell as administrator.
• Type in explorer.exe and press Enter.

It should put the taskbar back at the bottom of your screen. Check if it will freeze again.
