Windows 10: Windows 10 file explorer search does not work on one external USB hard drive

I have eight external USB hard drives always connected to my pc. File explorer "search" always returns "no items match your search" on just one particular drive although there definitely are matching file names. The drive is listed in the Index Options locations to be searched. I have used the index troubleshooter many times; it indicates it has fixed the "windows search is not working" issue, but the problem persists on the one drive.

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Windows 10 file explorer search on external hard drive not working

Hello,

I'm having trouble searching for files on my external hard drive using windows 10 file explorer. The search bar works and shows results for documents on my PC but searching on my hard drive comes up with "no items match your search".

I have tried things like restarting file explorer, making sure windows search service is enabled and rebuilding the search index but these haven't worked.

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
