Windows 10 File LongPathsEnabled Not Working

    Hi,

I have recently revived files over the 256 file length limit of Window 10 on a USB FAT32 and wish to move them to my hard drive NFTS. I followed instruction from online forums to correct the issue. Changing file names will introduce instabilities in other files.

I was instructed to change in Registry Editor:

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\LongPathsEnabled = 1 hex

After restarting my computer as per the instructions I attempted to move the files again only to be met with the same issue. After consulting the forum I attempted to use the Group Policy Editor:

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > NTFS > Enable Win32 long paths = Enabled

After restarting again the file length remained an issue.

Any help that will enable me to keep the file names will be much appreciated.

    System details:

    Windows 10 Pro - version 2004

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.
