Windows 10: Windows 10 First Impressions?

That part's quite odd I found but I think that might be intentional though. The idea is to use the virtual Desktops as a means to keeping an X amount of windows open in one workspace. If you were to be opening up File Explorer again in a different VD, there's a likelihood you can lose track of what other File Explorer windows are open and make a mess of everything. It makes sense, but at the same time might cause some issues. I can see a scenario where I would have several File Explorer windows open running some copy actions between a few hard drives. But then I want to step away from that and add music to my Windows Telephone through File Explorer, whoops! Right smack dab in the middle of the copy actions between those hard drives and now have to shuffle around through windows I didn't want to shuffle around, or add more windows to the mess.

 

Holy crap! They even changed the Computer icon in regedit!

 

I think I could get to like it. I didn't really miss the start menu. I don't use it a lot.

What really got my goat was the flicking in to full screen "Modern" apps at the slightest excuse. Now that they run windowed on the desktop they are OK.

Virtual desktops are a useful feature poorly implemented. What is wrong with the Linux approach of an icon on the task bar that shows you which desktop is active and click to change?

 

Oh, very good to know as that was a concern of mine.
Now about the Icons in the start menu... can they be changed to text...??

 

So far.. Love it!!
Made it my primary and I'm not going to turn back. Everything went fine when I did the update from Win8.1.
All of my programs/apps are running just fine.

No complaints from me.

 

I think, there will be a totally new generation of HATERS.... The Touchscreen Lovers. Although Win 10 is designed for both UIs, I am sure there will be whinings from "touch fans".

 

They have Win8 *Smile

 

I like it, now going to check whether Movie maker works, dual booting with 8.

what version of W8.1 did you update from -- I've been using W8.1 Enterprise and it seems to want to re-set / remove all your existing apps.

I don't have enterprise just the "regular" Win8.1 Pro with Update One. When I did my update it kept the data and all of the programs/apps. The procedure went smooth and rather fast.

I was also successful in upgrading from W7. All the programs I had installed on W7 seem to work just fine on W10. The only thing I noticed is that option to change over to the Start Screen is grayed out and can not be checked. I noticed that Brink has a tutorial on this and will see if option 2 will work.

 

Feels like faster 8.1, yet it takes two times less space then 8.1, that is just wow. 20GB vs 10GB.
9,7 GB actually and that includes some software installed, so it is like 9 GB only, really amazing.
Though TreeSize shows 11,8 GB, that is strange, since it should be less, but it still great anyway.

I think it was MY mistake -- I'm running ENTERPRISE W8.1 and obviously downloaded the NON enterprise version of W10. I'm now re-doing with the ENTERPRISE version which looks like it's updating OK.

Be careful in which version you download -- there's a NON enterprise and an ENTERPRISE version. If you can see a Windows to Go icon in control panel then you have the ENTERPRISE version.

That may be an illusion... Or, more accurately, they fixed the illusion of using a lot of space that Windows 7/8 had.

In earlier versions, Windows used "hard links" to point to the same file multiple times in the WinSxS directory, and this caused Explorer to report a lot more space "in use" than really was. They may have finally fixed this.
