Windows 10 on Toshiba laptop Windows updated itself about a week ago, and hasn't booted up since. I can get a command prompt window. chkdsk seemed to run fine, although the log could not be written.bootrec /fixmbr ran finebootrec /fixboot results in the missing file system error.I am a reasonable expert at computers. But this issues I am not able to resolve.I ran "sfc /scannow", but this is not able to complete.I tried many things already.I also created a virtual copy of the disk and its 4 partitions to VirtualBox to be able to "play" with all I could find on the internet.Ever

    Hi,

To isolate this issue, let's boot your computer to Safe mode and check if the issue persists. To do this, follow the steps below:

    • Click the Power icon at the bottom-right of your screen and hold the
      Shift key.
    • Click Restart while holding the Shift button.
    • Click Troubleshoot.
    • Click Advanced options
    • Click Startup settings
    • Click Restart
    • Your computer will restart and give you a list of startup options. Kindly press "4" to select
      Enable safe mode.

Check if you would get the password prompt while is Safe mode. If yes, log in to it and open Command Prompt as administrator. At the Command Prompt window, type
sfc /scannow and hit Enter. It will run the System File Checker tool to check and repair any missing or corrupted system files. Once it's done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

If you are still unable to get the password prompt while in Safe mode, kindly follow the steps below to run a
    System Restore instead:

    • Click the Power icon at the bottom-right of your screen and hold the
      Shift key.
    • Click Restart while holding the Shift button.
    • Click Troubleshoot.
    • Click Advanced options
    • Click System Restore.
    • Your computer will restart to the System Restore window. Follow the on-screen instructions and select the restore point with the date and time when the computer was working fine.
Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.

System Volume Information contains redundant historical "System Volume Information" files using 80% of my disk

    Hi,

There are different options available in the Windows 10 operating system that allow you to manage the disk drives on your computer. This includes formatting disk drives or cleaning up junk files.
The system volume information folder contains the system restore point entries,
data used by the content indexing service databases that speed up your file searches, the volume shadow copy service for backups, and the distributed link tracking service databases used to repair shortcuts and links.

Usually, it is not recommended to delete the entries from the System volume information since Windows needs this files. For us to resolve your concern, kindly attempt the steps below to shrink the size of the System Volume Information
    folder:

    • Press the Windows key + x to open the Quick link menu and from the list select
      Control panel.
    • Select System and Security and then from the options presented choose
      System.
    • On the left had the panel of the System information window, select the option
      System protection.
    • Once you have the System properties window open, select the
System protection tab and then click on the button labeled configure.
    • You can now control how much disk space Windows uses for System Restore points.

Once you complete the steps you can now attempt to delete the folder and check if this improves the storage space you have on the disk drives.

We look forward to your response once you complete the steps.
