Windows 10: Windows 10 floating Taskbar menu design spotted in preview builds

Microsoft is said to be working on a visual overhaul for Windows 10 that’s set for release this October/November. The update is internally known as the Sun Valley, also known as ‘version 21H2’, will introduce a “sweeping visual rejuvenation of Windows,” including a new interface for Start Menu, significant improvements for Explorer, and more.

Microsoft is constantly testing out new UI features for Windows 10, and on apps like Alarms & Clock, we’ve been seeing quite a few different adjustments as of late. One of the most notable alterations appears to be the introduction of rounded corners, but it looks like the update will also include a new “floating” design.

Reports have suggested that Microsoft is working on a floating Start Menu, which will appear visually separated from the taskbar. So far, we’ve only seen Windows 10’s rumoured Sun Valley design in unofficial mockups.

Today, we’re getting our first look at the actual code in the preview builds, which confirms that the leaks were accurate.

The new UI for taskbar jumplist (right-click menu) places menus within a floating box. The feature is currently hidden behind the experimental flag “JumpListRestyledAcrylic”, which can be activated if you debug the ShellExperienceHost.exe using Visual Studio and set “JumpListRestyledAcrylic” to visible.

Instead of being attached to the taskbar, right-click menu for pinned/open apps, flyouts, etc will now float above the taskbar, leaving a visible gap. The same floating design is also coming to Action Center, Clock flyout, Volume flyout, and WiFi flyout. However, at the moment, the design is only live for the jumplist menu.

Microsoft is still developing the floating UI feature and it currently works partially, as shown in the below GIF.

The final version will not include the borders around the menu

The floating menus are something we’ve already seen in preview builds of Windows 10X and other operating systems like macOS.

These overhauls will be part of the Sun Valley update and the final version will not have the borders. You can expect them to look and work better than the current implementation.

At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be any options to turn off the floating interface in Windows 10. However, the default functionality of core components won’t be radically different from the current version and it shouldn’t bother most people. For enthusiasts, Microsoft is believed to be working on bigger changes, including a new optional Start Menu.

Release date

According to reports, Microsoft is set to hold a ‘What’s new for Windows’ event in May. This special event could also be a session at the big Build 2021 conference, which is set to begin in the last week of May.

Previous reports have suggested that Windows 10 Sun Valley update will be finalized in May and begin rolling out to consumers in October or November.

Before Sun Valley launch, Windows 10 is expected to get version 21H1 “Spring 2021” update with quality improvements.

Feature suggestion: Add right-click menu

Suggestion: Please add a Windows 7 Jump-List and/or right-click menu to the GPU-Z icon in the Windows taskbar. Possible menus in it would be "Exit" and "About GPU-Z...".
Maybe also "Switch to tab 1/Switch to tab 2/Switch to videocard 1/Switch to videocard 2" too.
Examples of programs that have such menus are ICQ, Skype, AIM.

NOTE: It seems for a right-click menu, Windows 7 is not needed - it works on WinXP and Vista too.
But even a Windows 7 Jump-list may be good enough.

Windows 10 taskbar app icon not showing preview (Taskbar Hover preview)

What is the edition of windows 10 installed in your computer? Home or Pro?

Is it an abrupt issue? Do you have any System Restore point set in Windows prior to the issue?

Did you check if the issue still persists, when you login to Windows using a different user account?

Now, if you are using Windows 10 Pro, you may also try to enable or disable the thumbnail preview using group policy editor in Windows.
Follow the steps to do so:
a) Press Windows and R key together to open the run box.

b) Type “gpedit.msc” in the box and hit Enter.

c) Now, navigate to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, and
Start Menu and Taskbar in left pan of Group Policy Editor.

d) Locate “Turn off Taskbar Thumbnails” in right pane of Group policy editor and double click on it.

e) Select Disable and click on Apply and then on
OK.

Check if you are able to view the images.

Tried the suggested method, but still couldn't view the thumbnails.

Inspired By You - Start Menu in Windows 10

Greetings from Jen Gentleman, Eric Papamarcos, and Rick Duncan of the Windows CoreUX team. Today, we’d like to focus on one of the cornerstones of Windows 10 — the Start menu — and how suggestions from Windows Insiders have helped craft it into what it is today.

The Start menu was introduced in Windows 95, and over time has become one of the most iconic parts of the Windows experience. After years of iterations, improvements, and refinements, there was a bold redesign of Start in Windows 8 which replaced the Start button and menu with a Start screen full of live tiles.

The Start screen provided a more immersive and customizable home for your apps, but people missed the familiar Start menu. So, we took the best of both worlds – the familiarity of the Start menu and the versatility of live tiles – and created the new Start menu in Windows 10.

The new Start menu proved hugely popular, and since then, we’ve been making the Start menu even better with your help.

Insiders weigh in on a new menu design

With the next version of Windows after the initial Windows 10 launch (Windows 10 Anniversary Update), we continued to refine Start with a cleaner design that reduced the amount of clicking and scrolling needed to launch apps.

One of the core objectives of the new design was to simplify tasks. To achieve this, we made two particularly significant changes:

We elevated the All apps list to the top level, making it easier to access all of your apps.

We combined the “Most used” and “All apps” views to address the confusion that many users felt between the two views.

During development, we tried something that we’d never done before: we shared our designs and thoughts with Windows Insider even before they were available to try out in an Insider Preview build. We packaged them up as a “Quest” in the Feedback Hub and asked one, simple question: “What do you think of our new Start menu design?”

The response to our Quest was amazing! Between the Quest we did for Start menu and a similar one we did for Action Center, there were over 45,000 responses. The feedback was strongly positive. Over 80% of Insiders liked or were okay with the new design for the Start menu, and 83% liked or were okay with the new design of the Start screen. And so, with the strong support of Insiders, we added our new design to Insider Preview build 14328!

But our work for Start in the next version of Windows 10 wasn’t done quite yet. Suggestions from Insiders continue to pour into the Feedback Hub and we made some other adjustments along the way, including:

Moved the recently installed apps section above the “Most used” section to help you get to your new apps faster.

Provided the option to hide the All apps list – a suggestion that received almost 6,500 votes by Insiders.

Added tile folders to better organize Start Tiles – another big request from Insiders that received over 4,000 Insider votes, including over 1,500 votes in one feedback post

Windows 10 Creators Update gets even more polish

As we moved into the next Windows releases (Windows 10 Creators Update and Fall Creators Update), we refined some of the design elements in Start:

Introduced Fluent Design’s acrylic material to the Start frame for a beautiful layer of transparency.

Crafted a buttery smooth resize experience (including the addition of diagonal resizing) and transition to tablet mode.

Added eye-catching icons to context menus for a more user-friendly design.

We showcased these and other improvements to Insiders in builds like Insider Preview build 16215. (Check out the icons below)

To Version 1803 and beyond!

As we rolled into the next wave of Windows Insider Preview builds, feedback from Insiders continued to inspire another wave of improvements. Here are a few recent highlights:

Simplified letter grouping in Start for East Asian languages: One of the top feedback items we’ve received from our users is that it’s too hard and takes too long to find apps in the all apps list because of the way the apps are grouped when using East Asian languages. In fact, over 12,000 Insiders suggested a new format, so we delivered the simplified grouping of apps in the apps list in Insider Preview build 17063.

New Reveal effect to Start in All apps. Introduced in the All apps list in Insider Preview build 17004, Fluent Design’s Reveal highlight is a lighting effect to illuminate important elements when your mouse hovers over them.

More discoverable folders. See those icons that appear in the bottom left corner of the Start menu in the image below? They’re quick links to get to important parts of your PC experience. In response to your feedback, especially for those upgrading to Windows 10 for the first time, in Insider Preview build 17074 we added Documents and Pictures folders by default and also made it easier to customize this list. (Just right click on an icon and select ‘personalize this list’.)
