Windows 10: Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving

Hi everyone,

I seem to be having 2 issues with Windows 10 Pro x64 that occur simultaneously. The 2 issues are that my desktop icon positions are not being remembered (always shifting to the left after reboot - auto align is off) and my folder view settings are not being saved (change folder preference to thumbnail view -> close window -> reopen same folder but always displays list mode).

The things I have tried so far is:
- Rebooting into safe mode and typing in sfc /scannow in the command prompt (did not fix)
- Rebuilding my Windows 10 icon cache using the .bat file and methods found here (did not fix)

It seems the only way to fix these issues to to format and perform a clean install of Windows or recovering from a previously working cloned Windows 10. However, regardless of the approach, after a few days the 2 issues will emerge simultaneously after some point.

I was wondering if anyone else was/is experiencing these issues or if there are any fixes I could try? Thanks.

It seems to be reported by a majority of folks here in the forums that there is a strong correlation between Windows 10 (any version) and ESET (antivirus or security suite - doesn't matter which version). Essentially, if/when ESET detects a virus and proceeds to remove or quarantine the virus, the result afterwards is that ESET does something to the windows registry that *borks* the registry and thus will result in the 2 issues being discussed.

Several members have attempted various approaches to fix the problem to no avail. It has been suggested that the only way to permanently fix the problem is to completely reformat Windows 10 (clean install) and use a different antivirus program (do not install ESET after the clean installation).
*It is important to note that uninstalling ESET AFTER experiencing these issues will not fix the problem as the damage is already done*

ESET moderator Marcos has announced an update which should permanently fix the issues for many users.

Edit: 9/27/2015 [Manual Fix] [For Auto Fix Scroll Further Down]

A user from the ESET forums named AREZCO has posted a manual fix.

Run regedit (start menu > run/search > regedit) and go to these 2 destinations:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\InProcServer32\

-AND-

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\InProcServer32\

Double click on (Default) and replace "%SystemRoot%\SysWow64\shell32.dll" with "%SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll" in both file destinations.

If you are receiving a message saying that you do not have permission to modify your registry keys then follow the steps in the section below. After giving yourself permission to modify the registry keys proceed to modify the registry keys in the two locations stated above. When both of the registry keys have been changed restart your computer and see if the issues have been resolved.

On another note, for people who feel uncomfortable or don't know know to modify their registry files, you can download and install these files which were created by forum resident chimera8888 which will automatically apply the registry fixes stated above. However, you will still need to give yourself permission to edit the registry keys (see section below).

How To Give Yourself Permission To Edit The Registry Keys

**It is important to note that you need to have permission to change the value of these keys so in order to do that you must perform the steps stated below.**

Forum user Zash has provided an auto fix which can now be used. You must reboot into safe mode first and then proceed to run the applicable version depending on which version of Windows 10 you are using (32 bit or 64 bit). Desktop icon keeps reappear

I have the same problem and I don't know how to solve this problem..
Did you find any solution?It's frustrating me..

 

Unfortunately not. I've reverted back to Windows 7 since reinstalling Windows 10 three times a week is not an experience I want to endure just to use the OS, nor have the patience for.

The issues of having my desktop icons always shifting to the left after a reboot and my folder view settings not being saved have never happened to me during my usage of Windows 7 (never tried 8/8.1). I'm not sure what could have been causing the issues since I only had a few programs installed such as Office 2013, Photoshop CC, Chrome, Firefox, Foxit Reader, CCleaner, and ESET. In addition, I turned off all of my privacy settings, disabled Cortana/web search and I never signed on using a Microsoft account.

 

Same problem, searched via 'Google' and found no solutions, to date (sigh) *really My laptop display is broken, so I've got an external monitor attached (Display #2), and when I put the laptop into 'Sleep' mode, it wakes up with the wrong resolution on the secondary display, and my desktop icons, which I have so carefully arranged in specific positions, get rearranged back to the left, mostly (some remain on the right side, out of view, until I reset the resolution).
The primary issue, however, is that it seems Windows 10 has no option, as did Win XP, et al, to 'Remember desktop icon positions', or to 'Restore Desktop icon positions'. Windows, in general, seems to have had issues with this feature, for some reason. In the past, I've had to resort to installing a 3rd party program to help Windows 'Remember/Restore desktop icon positions'. I've looked for a similar program recently, and have yet to locate one.
If anyone knows of a simple fix for this issue, or has a lead on such a 'Freeware' program that will run in Windows 10, since we can likely be assured MS won't be addressing this problem to our desires anytime soon, please advise. Thanks! *Nerd

 

Just ran into same issue yesterday. Now my desktop keeps resetting to default arrangement when I restart my PC (or even if refresh desktop) and none of the folder sorting or view settings stay.. they just reset non-stop.

Posted on microsoft forums this issue and so far all I've gotten from them is
"update windows, do clean boot, make a new user account"

Which non worked.. on top of that new user creation didn't work at all ... as it failed some sort of user service..

This is really frustrating issue.. tried messing around in registry... did nothing.. Last resort would be installing windows fully again (which I wont able to do for few months anyways) but even if I'll do the clean install and this same issue occurs again.. then its seriously microsoft messup...

 

Short-term 'work-around', while we wait for a real solution, is to limit the number of icons on the desktop, so that when they 'rearrange', it doesn't take too long to put them back where we like them ... until the next reboot, or ? I think MS's idea was simply to use their desktop alternative 'App Layout', and forego the old-style desktop icons arrangement, hence, neglecting to include the icons' 'Remember where we parked' options *Wink lol ... It's all part of discontinuing anything resembling 'backward compatibility', I believe (heavy sigh) :-/ The push is more toward MS-Friendly, rather than User-Friendly *Sad

 

So there is no solution for the problems?

 

There seems to be no solution, as of yet, offered by Microsoft, that I can find. I did, however, locate a small program* that I believe (so far) will stop the desktop icon rearranging, resolution issue, until MS gets their 'stuff' together and offers a fix:

I've only had it installed for about a day, but ... I put my laptop to sleep last night, and this morning it was fine when I woke it up. Desktop resolution was as it should be, and my icons returned to where I parked them. Before installing 'DesktopOK', when I 'restarted' after 'sleep' mode, the resolution was changed and my icons forgot where they were ... so, yeah ... it looks like it worked. I want to give it a few more cycles, shutdown, sleep, etc., before I'm ready to give it a glowing review *Wink I'll let you know over the next couple of days.

Same here and this issue is really bugging me.

I like the contents of my personal folders to display tiles but I can only get lists displaying now.

Also no matter how I arrange the icons on the desktop they re-arrange themselves after a reboot.

Possibly one of those unpublished updates could have been the cause.

 

I have the same problem too... *Eek (minus the desktop icon problem.. 'cuz i use rainmeter for that)...

Since I upgraded to Windows 10, my folder view settings always reset to list or details.. it sucks.. so much...
I already did that registry-edit stuff but it didn't work..
I'm also wondering why my two coworker's PC didn't have that problem.. I upgraded their PC to Windows 10 too. One uses Windows 7 Professional while the other one uses Windows 8.1 Pro.. *Sad

I'm kinda a perfectionist and this problem has been bugging me for awhile now..
