Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving

I too have eset antivirus here (Smart Security 9 beta) and faced this issue many times. So far only resolution for me was to reset or restore system.

Now the issue is back on my PC after I had restored due to same issue last week. Few minutes ago I was dealing with a virus detected by eset and when its done, the folder view issue started!!!

So I can somewhat confirm you eset antivirus is causes the issue. Anyways, I will try to uninstall it and see if folder view fixes otherwise have to do system restore.

Edit: Uninstalling of Eset didn't helped. *Sad Had to use recent restore point again and this time I have removed Eset and will use different security software.

    Thanks...
    Best Regards

    Hello everyone!!

I've the same problem and started yesterday. No problem with desktop or icons, but with the folder view.
No way to have my folder view saved: if I exit from the folder, when I return the visualization is newly on details view.

Windows 10 was installed 3 weeks ago and till yesterday no problem with folder viewing settings.
I have me too Eset Smart security (version 8.0.319.0) on Windows 10 Home (version 10.0.10240).
Never received any alarm for virus.

For sure, this situation is a nightmare for me. I work switching back and forth from one folders to another and I need to have the pictures in extra large icons and sorted by modified data.
But, every time I change the folder (so every few seconds) I need to reset all and this is impossible.

I did SFC /SCANNOW Command without any result.
I did a complete virus scan: nothing.

And till yesterday at startup, for 3 weeks, no problem at all.
I cannot check the Windows update on my Win 10 version: I hate this solution for the automatic update!!

If someone find a solution, please post here *Smile

i did found a work around today... instead of restarting or shutting down the laptop i leave it to sleep on it's own and when i press power button to wake it up everything stays the same desktop icons no longer rearranging position and change size but did not confirm folder views yet...

Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving

Hi, forgive me for asking an elementary question:
If you rt click the desktop, is 'Auto-arrange icons' ticked or not?
Just that I've not noted it in the discussion. I'm guessing 99% that's not the problem.

That said, there are plenty of reports about it - even (horrors!) by Windows 7 (yes , 7!) users...
    e.g.
Desktop icons rearrange themselves every other reboot - Windows 7 Help Forums
    - so it's a relatively old issue..

Now, reading the last post, it seems the only problem is for desktop icons.

I don't have that problem. I don't have any icons on desktop but Rainmeter only.
But I still have the problem of sorting order for folder and we are discussing here and in other forums to find a solution.

Do you still have that problem?

Hi, looking at the registry entry in the first article:
    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU\0\1
as well as the first (desktop) I see 4 keys referring to shell.

I don't have this particular problem, thankfully, but if you were very lucky, it could be that there lies your answer.. it would need someone to try it.

    Thanks DrUnKeNTiGeR.

    1. to crosscheck, can you confirm Auto Arrange Icons is not checked (rt click desktop, view).
    2. can you experiment with the settings from rt click desktop, Desktop Icon Positions, manually saving and restoring positions, and Automatically restore icon layout on resolution change

Seems we need a bit more info to find the right direction.
Meanwhile, further searches might yield an alternative.

Note that the article I cited said this:
I could not get into Bags\1 - 'Error on opening' message but I could get into permissions which I reset including the 'owner' tab.

So it might be reasonable to suggest that if this was not true, that solution might not apply.
So did you not a permissions issue at all?

  12. I am aware that you stated that you couldn't find the entry I thought I would try it anyway.
I of course dont have auto arrange checked. i have tried turning it on and then off again no change.
only option i see currently is to use an application till Microsoft fixes the issue. And yes I will continue searching however I felt this was the most promising thread on the issue.

Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving

Hi, I do have that entry, hence my comment about the keys relating to the shell. (Never said I didn't).
Fortunately I don't have the problem..*Smile (and I do use periodic disk imaging, so should it occur I guess I'd notice fairly quickly and be able to revert to a recent image).

All the threads I've read either end up reinstalling in some way or other or proposing 3rd party software.
So- there is a work around for desktop icons, and explorer settings changing perhaps aren't so irritating- and one can generally use a 3rd party file manager. Hmm.

It is, as you know, an exceedingly commonly reported issue.
I don't have the updates mentioned in
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...a47da31?page=1
but I do have all updates to date.

Ok, so I've had a look a couple of times at what changes in the registry when desktop icons are moved.
For what it's worth here are some entries that seem involved.
I tried setting 'Auto arrange' - I thought there would be a related key that could be easily identified, but this didn't show up as such. These are the ones that changed.

It would be no more than a guess that the last two are related.

With appropriate precautions, you could try merging those entries from a 'good' build, bearing in mind this is no more than an experiment.
