Windows 10: Windows 10 forced update deletes all of drive C:

I was using my homebuild Asus P8P67Pro Sandybridge i5 3700, system disk Samsung 850, yesterday (9 Jan), and as I shut down about midday Win 10 forced an update on me. It'd done it before and nothing went wrong then, but it had not yet done the dreaded Autumn update.

When I started the system in the evening all was not well. On a blue screen was:


Your PC needs to be repaired.

The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

File\Boot\BCD Error code 000014c


It also mumbled about asking my systems manager (me) for recovery tools and installation disks.


My Windows installation disk is a Windows 7, from which I had been seduced away by the siren call of free Windows 10.


I had made a recovery USB in December and that was all, alas. I booted from that and found a succession of promising recovery tools which found they could do nothing and offered me instead a beautifuly embossed blue and white Computer Shut Down button.

I noticed a DOS screen utility and thought to have a look at this system disk with its errors. There were no errors. It was quite empty. C:\ vuoto, vide, nichts, nichevo. Some upgrade!

I've heard about a Win 10 ISO disk, but it seems this is no longer available. So please Microsoft where do I get back all my system files, not to mention the many application programs and the user files (mine weren't stored on C?

^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.

To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").


To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:

• Right-click on your C: drive.
• Select "Properties".
• Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
• After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
• Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
• Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.

 

C windows installer folder - Delete?

He can do symbolic link redirection and move the files in it to a different location. *Wink
Better try it out in a virtual of first. Just a suggestion.

Like:
First move everything in c:\windows\installer to d:\installercache
Then delete c:\windows\installer folder
Then type this in command mode as admin
mklink /d c:\windows\installer d:\installercache

Removing those installer files is a bad idea. it might prevent you from updating or uninstalling apps.
