Windows 10: Windows 10 freezes randomly

On Sunday, I started having issues with my computer. At what seem to be random times, everything on my screen except my mouse will freeze, including app icons on the task bar; if I hover over them, nothing happens. My mouse will continue moving for anywhere between 3 and maybe 30 seconds, and then it too will freeze. If I am listening to a song at the time, it will continue to play, but I have no control over pausing it. It will automatically pause when the song finishes (this is the app store version of Spotify). I have not tested volume or trying to skip the song, but I would assume these wouldn't work either. I have checked the most recently modified log in C:\Windows\Temp, and it doesn't seem to include anything that could be causing an issue. I don't know where any other logs are. So far the only fix to the freeze has been to force restart; I waited half an hour on one freeze, and it didn't return to normal.


This started happening just after I tried to get a second graphics card working. The one that is currently in my computer is a Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAE8D7Z71694). I tried to install a Radeon R9 280x (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150678) and it didn't work; no graphics output whatsoever. My graphics driver now says that it is "AMD Radeon R9 200 / HD 7970 Series." I have tried to revert to the previous driver and update it, and neither option gets rid of the R9 200 part.


Things I have tried to fix the issue:

• Freed up 20ish gigabytes on my SSD in case it was full (about 9 were originally free)
• Updated Windows
• Checked for new graphics drivers

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, that would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has ideas on how to get the 280x working, that would be amazing; I would like to give my current graphics card to someone else in my family to use.

I had already tried turning off fast startup, to no avail.
Will look at the list you provided, thanks. Hard to do when computer freezes on the Windows loading screen though. *Biggrin

• Which is the last Windows update build you've applied to the computer?
• Are there any third party applications that are currently installed?

Furthermore, we suggest that you do a BIOS update to your computer. Here are the steps:

• Check the motherboard manufacturer's website to find the specific model of your motherboard.
• Go to the computer manufacturer's website.
• Look for the computer model that you're using.
• You should find any available BIOS update.
